We had the good fortune of connecting with IG: @TonyArcosContractor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi IG: @TonyArcosContractor, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had a taste of running my family’s small business when I was 22 years old. I wore many hats during that time, I was a manager, I was payroll, I was the sales manager, I was in charge of hiring, firing and of course operations to make sure we correctly fulfill our sales orders to our customers. It was a stressful job but at the same time it was really FUN! I was hooked, Everyday something would arise that needed attention and it almost became a game of chess with the problem vs myself. The more problems I would solve the more confident I became and felt that one day I too would want to own my own business.

Of course saying I would one day open my own business vs actually doing it, took about 18 years. It felt like the time was just never right. My wife and I started a family, so I “needed” a stable job, We bought our first home, again I “needed” to keep a stable job, we had our 2nd child, again needed stability. By this time I had what I thought was a stable job and guess what happened!? I got laid off. After my wife Melissa had our 3rd child I was in my late 30’s and we decided it was time to take some kind of risk.

Our thought process during all this was to show our kids to not let fear keep you from fulfilling your dreams. By this time I was in my late 30’s and had already been working in construction for a few years off and on and knew if I didn’t jump in with both feet NOW the decision to start a business does not get easier as time passes. I wanted to show our kids there was a different way to live other than working a normal “stable” 9-5 job. I wanted to be able to attend our kids’ sports activities as they got older, I wanted to be able to have the option of moving my schedule around to be able to spend more quality time with my family.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I think what sets us apart is that we do not compromise on our quality or integrity. We are constantly looking for ways to better serve our clients. We are also not in the business of taking on more jobs that we can handle. Many contractors get a bad reputation because of this and they have a hard time saying “no” or I can’t commit 100% to that job right now, can we schedule it out? They say yes knowing they don’t have the man power which usually leads to a bad client experience.

Business lessons I’ve learned along the way is you have to put yourself in uncomfortable positions to grow. Every great achievement is on the other side of fear. AND Everything is hard… going to work everyday for someone else is hard, going out and starting your own business is hard, I think you just have to choose which hard you want in life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Favorite spots around the city would be Tantalum and open Sesame for food. The beach to relax and last but not least probably to a pickleball court to get some cardio in haha

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh man where do I start!? I want to thank ME, Just kidding first and foremost God for giving me the courage and strength because this was one of the scariest decisions yet the most full-filling things I’ve ever done. My wife Melissa because she was down to take that risk with me when I initially told her I was thinking of quitting my “stable” job. My mom for her moral support and my dad who was in the trenches with me when we first started building back in the day and Last but not least our Foreman Edy who helps us run all of our ADU & Home Remodel projects.
