We had the good fortune of connecting with Imani McCray and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Imani, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Be the Change Photo: is a photojournalism series designed to inspire positive behavioral change in the world – by highlighting the amazing work of dedicated people and organizations working to shape a better future through advocacy and action. Notably, it spotlights conflict within multicultural societies where systemic trauma and its effects remain unremedied.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For the last three years, I have been creating a global advocacy photography exhibition called “Be the Change.” It is comprised of stories and photos from actively volunteering in danger zones and conflict areas, creating environmental and historical landmark preservation programs, and advocating for marginalized communities. This Exhibition was recently shown at the North Carolina Museum of Art in February 2023. Some images from this exhibition have won multiple recognitions and received several International Photography Awards. This active art is meant to inspire the education system, arts programs, and cultural influencers to normalize advocacy and philanthropy.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
‘I’m passionate about LA’s food and culture and love guiding my friends to the best art and food attractions, such as vibrant street art in the Arts District, the colorful murals at the Grand Central Market, and the stunning galleries at the Getty Museum. LA is full of hidden art gems, including The Underground Museum, Watts Towers, the Mosaic Tile House, and the Museum of Jurassic Technology. And for a classic LA taste, Philippe the Original’s famous French Dip sandwich is a must-try.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As an individual, I know that I can only do so much alone. Without the aid of the Ionion Center for Art and Culture and its Director Sophie Giannakis Kagadis and so many more, I would not have been able to endeavor on a nine-month European tour. Allowing “Be the Change” to be showcased and exhibited in London, Rome, Greece, and Sweden.
