Meet India Hammond | Professional Hair & Makeup Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with India Hammond and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi India, how does your business help the community?
My business helps the community because I tend to make women feel and look like their best selves. To be more specific, I specialize in black women and our natural textured tresses. Society has always been a little strict when it came to black women and what they believed our hair should be. A lot of people in the community sometimes lack self confidence and I am fortunate enough to be of service, give an ear when they need someone to listen, build up their confidence by reassuring that they are aware of how beautiful our curly, coily hair is. As the times are finally changing, we are standing up for what is us, being free and letting our hair just be.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a professional hairstylist and makeup artist. What sets me apart from others is my integrity and the ability to just be my authentic self. At the moment, I’m currently most proud of myself for never giving up or listening to too much outside noise and other people pouring their own insecurities onto me and my goals. I am where I am today because I continuously am a student to my craft. I am always excited to learn or perfect different techniques. The power is in never getting too popular or simply afraid to be a student. It definitely was not easy, but I constantly remind myself daily that whatever I want in life is within reach and I have to stay consistent to get it. One of the most important things I did to overcome challenges was to pour back into myself. I learned that I couldn’t help take care of anyone else until I took care of myself. I want the world to know that this is only the very beginning and just a taste of what I have to offer this world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
On my free time I like to skate. I would take my best friend to a skating rink to bring the inner child back to the forefront. I would take them to the Vegan exchange market on Sunday to try an array of different vegan foods and of course I would go to the beach like twice in that same week. I would also take them to Runyon Canon on the horse back riding because its such an amazing view. Hollywood boulevard is always another place for them to check out if they are interested in seeing the stars.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shoutout my LA tribe (they know exactly who they are). Moving to LA was me jumping out of what I saw and felt was comfort and into an entire different atmosphere which at one point, I thought was unreachable. I met some amazing people going to Paul Mitchell Sherman Oaks, some genuine people who I will always be grateful for. These are people who listen, hold me accountable to my actions and goals, put my name in rooms I never thought would be possible and just simply believing in everything I have to offer. Outside of them, I also have my regular tribe who will always root for me no matter what career or venture I choose in life. Entrepreneurship wouldn’t be the same if it wasn’t for my peeps.
