We had the good fortune of connecting with Iona Burciaga and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Iona, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Personally, I think risk is exciting. I’d say most of the time when I decided to step out in faith, I took risks and I’m pretty much called to do that everyday because of my faith in God and because of my career.

If I never took risks and played it safe or even followed some “protocol” I wouldn’t be able to do so some of the things I’ve been able to. I would not have been graced with the ability to think outside the box because it is only within the confinement of our own beliefs that we are limited.

Plus, whether the risk fails or not, you never know it might just succeed if you go for it!

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I get to do what I love for a living by the grace of God. Every place where I’ve gotten to be a part of was due to Him.

I am so grateful that I got to experience the people and lives of diverse friends in the spheres of photography and skateboarding when that was what I was pursuing.

But as I have grown, I’ve wanted to get more serious about what I want to focus on long term, so hitting pause on those things was difficult for me because i genuinely loved them but I had to get serious about my goals.

One thing I’ve learned is you can start over/start something new anytime! And that shouldn’t be scary. And you can always save your skills for other moments! Don’t stop dreaming until you’re content with what you’re pursuing.

Take off the limitations of what you can do, or what you’ve been conditioned to think you can do.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Bake shop in Bushwick Blue Park to skate or under the K bridge
Public records Sound Room
