We had the good fortune of connecting with Irina Yakubin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Irina, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
What’s one thing about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?

I think that a lot of outsiders don’t necessarily know much about their own eye health, and really about the industry as a whole. Sight is one of our most treasured senses, but so often I hear “Oh wow, I never knew that,” or “You’re the first doctor who has ever explained that,” from my patients. We all know to brush and floss our teeth, exercise, and eat a healthy diet, but most people are unaware of the importance of screen hygiene or the need to see an eye doctor every year

One thing I want everyone to take away from this article is the importance of getting an annual eye exam, even if you do not wear glasses or contact lenses. Also, blinking is a lot more important than most people realize

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
OptiHealth Optometry is located inside Montana Eyes and is still a relatively new business. One of the reasons I started my own practice was so that I could focus on providing a more comprehensive level of care, which includes educating my patients about what’s happening with their eyes and vision.

I’m located right near the Palisades, so the fires in January had slowed things down. However, I was trying to do whatever I could to help the community, so I was basically doing free exams for whoever was affected by the fires. This put me in touch with several great people and organizations, including the Power of Sight Foundation, and opened up doors for more community involvement.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ooh this is a tough one. I’m not sure one week in the city would be enough.

Montana Avenue is full of delicious spots to eat and drink. Tea time at Buena Vida would be a must and Glavin’s down the street has some delicious desserts and sandwiches.

I live in West Hollywood, which offers a variety of options, including The Abbey and its surrounding restaurants. The Hollywood Bowl may be fun as well.

LACMA and the Ghetty Center would also be fun museums to visit .

I train in Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Krav Maga Wordlwide both in West Los Angeles and Sherman Oaks so I’d be taking my friend for a few classes.

A hike at Runyon or at the Griffith Park – with a visit to the Observatory would also be included, though if they insist on a more scenic route, perhaps the Descanso Gardens.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people who have played a major role in my success; family, friends, mentors etc., I want to do a shoutout for Montana Eyes, optical business that welcomed me to the area and whom I sublease from. Starting a business is intimidating, but sometimes finding just the right environment can be the proverbial push in the right direction.
