We had the good fortune of connecting with Isabella Margolis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Isabella, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I always love this question because it’s one of those things where the answer always tends to be a little cliche. Growing up I never really thought about pursuing a creative career. Although I was always drawing or doing some artistic activity, I always thought my future would be in the sciences because that was what stability required. But one day I blinked and the only career that I could fathom was one in the arts. The thought of doing anything other than digital media, film tv, etc… was something that made me sick to my stomach. So in short, I decided to pursue an artistic career because it was the only option for me. Nothing makes me feel more fulfilled and inspired to live daily life than my photography and my filmmaking 🙂 It’s simply what makes me the happiest.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art and my business as a freelancer has definitely changed throughout these past few months. I started out as just a photographer at an online DIY magazine doing shows for free and working a bunch of jobs on the side to kind of support the dream but I have been lucky enough to begin launching my own business as a freelancer/artist. Although I still love concert photography and continue to do it when I can, it felt limiting as a creator. I wanted more creative control as an artist and I felt that I had things worth creating so I’ve began moving towards more portrait photography as well as creative sort of concept shoots. Additionally, i’ve discovered a love for Behind the Scenes photography in film. I currently go to film school and in addition to recently writing and directing my own short film, I have gotten the chance to capture scenes from other films that i’ve either produced or just been on as a still photographer/videographer. It’s really unique mix of creative modes and environments and I think that my experience in working in so many different creative fields is what makes my art stand out form others. A big part of it as well is the intent I bring with me when creating. When I go to work on something, I go in with the intent to capture a feeling rather than a uniform aesthetic image. I’m fairly biased since i’m talking about my own work, but the feedback I get from my clients is always semi-related to the feelings that are brought up when they look at my work. The care is evident in the result. Or as some may say, the proof is in the pudding lol. But if there is one last thing that I wanted the world to know about me as a creator, it would be that I would love to work with you! An artist is not only the thing that makes me truly happy but it’s also the thing that I make a living doing and I would love a chance to experience more of the world through other’s creative visions and help them bring those to life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love this question. If I were to bring my best friend to my area I would definitely bring them to Alana’s Coffee Roasters to start. It’s favorite coffee shop in the area by far, not only do they make the best coffee but their food selection is just insane. For food/drink, we would have to hit Great White, Gjelina, Cava, Volcano Tea, The Brig, and some other places. I would probably take them hiking out near Topanga Canyon/Malibu beaches. Of course, we would also have to go to a concert at the Roxy, Belasco, or some other iconic venue!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Besides the support of my family, I think the individual who has supported me the most throughout my development as a creator is my one of my closest friends Melody. We met at my first ever show that I got to photograph. She invited me to join her magazine shortly after and if it wasn’t for her belief and trust in me as a photographer, I don’t think I would’ve ever truly tapped into my skill and my love for photography. Everything honestly started from her and the magazine. She really opened up the world of professional photography to me. Even to this day, she is still one of my biggest supporters even though i’m not really active in the magazine due to me working on my own business. I have many other supporters as well such as my good friend Josh who is honestly somewhat of my manager, as well as fellow creative friends and fans on social media. 🙂
