We had the good fortune of connecting with Isaiah Weatherspoon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Isaiah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My initial thought process for starting my own business was that I wanted to find and create a unique way to get kids involved in Music and the Arts but in a very interactive, “hands-on” type of way. That is what led me to start my own children’s music coloring book series titled “MUSIC IS COOL” !

What should our readers know about your business?
I think what makes my music coloring book business unique is that I myself am also a musician. I am a graduate of Berklee College of Music, Class of 2019. Currently, I am based in the Philadelphia area, I do professional drum gig, music production and studio drum session work. So, I would like to say that I am pretty immersed into the music scene culture. However during my time at Berklee, I had the opportunity of working as one of their Resident Assistants for three years. Sophomore to Senior year to be exact. My role of being an RA entailed becoming a trained peer leader for the college community and Resident life. One huge aspect that we had to focus on as RA’s was community engagement, programming and event stake holding! This part of the RA role was huge because we had the responsibility of planning monthly events, small and big. These program events were used for reasons such as bringing residents together, building a robust college community and to promote education and health & wellness. This part of the RA role really helped me to exercise creativity, and to learn how to think outside of the box. My time in college of programming, planning events and activities is actually what led me to starting my own music coloring book business today! Creating a coloring book reminded me of my former RA college job at Berklee in a peculiar way. Like programming, and creating events and activities for residents, creating a children’s coloring book would be a unique way to bring kids together in a positive way through music and art! I wouldn’t say at all, that it was easy for me to publish my first children’s coloring book. I had no idea how to do so at first and I had to do quite a bit of research on my own. I think I was able to overcome this obstacle by following through with my vision and also by gaining the support of my family. It has been rewarding and fulfilling to follow through with what was once just an initial idea and I am glad that I did not give up! One major key that I would want the world to know while reading this is to not let fear hold you back from trying something new or bringing a creative idea or vision to life. You never know what good things can come out of it!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If someone were visiting Philly, I would definitely tell them to go check out music venues/restaurants like Time and South Jazz Kitchen. These two places are in the heart of the city, have amazing food, and offer live-music which is a huge plus. For my musicians out there, sometimes Time restaurant offers live jam sessions at night during the weekends.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First of all, I have to thank and give credit to God for allowing me to be where I am today and for placing in me, an urge or a calling, to find creative ways to impact and inspire the youth to get involved in music & arts! Next, I have to thank all of my family and friends for their endless support and shoutouts. It definitely means a lot to me and it doesn’t go unnoticed!
