We had the good fortune of connecting with Isis J. Ramirez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Isis J., do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
One piece of conventional advice that I disagree with is having a large support group or big following to achieve a goal. We live in a society where it’s normalized to think followers, likes and views are the only way to be seen or acknowledged. I think if you truly believe in what you want to do and follow through in trusting your convictions your message and or idea will be conveyed accurately. By being authentically yourself with no filter, you’ll hit your target. People will take notice, not because of the success or recognition but because they can see the same concept you once thought only you yourself could begin to fathom.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would say my art is a random collection of vintage and modernized pieces. I’m very inspired by the 50s & 60s as well as niche styles like Experimental and Film noir. I can never stick to one specific category because my mind seems to grab a hold of something from one time period and mix it into another technique or style because I think it’s the most interesting and fun to create. Like many individuals I went to school, studied hard in my given field and now create beautiful things. The ride was not an easy one. From growing up in a single parent household to being surrounded in environments that created burdens, such as racism, sexism etc. These challenges made me feel different from my peers, but I never once thought it was a problem, I normalized it. I think by not fully processing, it made the situation more bearable. I always knew that there was more to life than what was being presented to me at the time. I’m an optimist and although life can be hard and complex the only way to move forward is by taking one foot in front of the other. It’s a simple concept but rings true every time. Staying grounded with positive relationships, routines, and exciting work are things that I connect with daily. Like I stated in the beginning, I wouldn’t consider my brand to be precise and perfect. No one can be perfect, we’re all flawed. And that’s okay. The world is constantly evolving and I feel that I am as well. My creations may have a start and end in the physical sense but I feel there will always be something about them that will keep minds open, thoughts provoking and conversations started.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I tend to go for places off the beaten path. I love trying new things so I’m always open to that. I would start by taking them to Patsy’s Diner, Red Maple, or Arden Café. Patsy’s has history, Red Maple has signature coffee’s, and Arden Café is stunning. They are unique and a favorite of mine. I would definitely take them to visit the Griffith Park Observatory & Train rides, the Walk of Fame, more importantly the Medieval Torture Museum (macabre history intrigues me), The Natural History Museum, and Santa Monica to see GTA in real life. I would then take them on a night out either to a scary movie at Century City or a Speakeasy. The Room in Hollywood, Locke & Key, Boardner’s by La Belle all give that spooky comforting feel.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people I’m grateful for in my journey thus far. My amazing family that has continually supported me and never once doubted me or my efforts. From helping film self tapes to going on the craziest adventures we always have so much fun together. I’d also like to thank my friends. I’ve had several relationships end due to my pursuit of acting. When you find people that stick by you and support you in multiple areas of life it’s freeing. Your support group should want you to thrive. My professor’s throughout college were a huge resource for me as well. They pushed me to my limits and although it was testing at times, I’m so grateful to have had that experience. I’m no longer afraid to try something that might not work the first time: because you can always try again. Lastly, I’d like to thank my professional team as I know they’re always putting in good words for me and doing their best to represent me in my truest and authentic form.
