Meet Issac Morgan: Journalist and Media Relations Professional

We had the good fortune of connecting with Issac Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Issac, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
One common phrase you here people say often regarding opportunities is that it’s all about who you know. While it’s always helpful to know the right people connected to your passion, it’s not the end of the world if you don’t. In fact, throughout my career starting in the entertainment industry, I did not have any connections when I first went after my dreams. I had to put myself out there and do my own research, whether that was utilizing social networks like LinkedIn or sending emails to strangers asking about any opportunities to work for free to gain experience. I had to think outside the box – which led to collaborating with a friend of mine who is in the film industry on a music video that was aired on BET’s 106 n Park. I was an intern for a promotions company and a radio station and would meet top artists at events and was able to meet different managers. And from those connections I gained from unpaid internships, the film director was able to successfully pitch productions where I served as a co-producer. Over the years, I made a switch to covering news as a journalist and was able to interview a variety of public figures and influential lawmakers. In state politics, I didn’t know much starting off and had to learn through research.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would say it was a tough journey in the world of journalism and entertainment, consisting of sleeping on couches and trying new things to reach my career goals. I was able to connect with a business partner in Louisiana who’d become a friend, which we were able to collaborate on his podcast that transitioned into a radio show. Collaboration has been key and establishing a team of professionals who have similar aspirations has helped along my path. And then I was able to cover politics and issues affecting Black communities in Florida as a journalist – a rewarding opportunity that required a lot of studying because I was used to strictly covering people in entertainment. I had to learn to overcome my fears of the unknown and be able to take constructive criticism from vets in the game. In fact, Christopher “Play” Martin of the legendary rap group Kid ‘n Play served as a mentor and business partner where he allowed me to showcase journalistic skills to gain publicity for his forthcoming film, “AndiDanced” and manage his media platform.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
West Hollywood has a lot to offer when visiting on business and had the opportunity to explore the historic Melrose Avenue in LA, where we took great pictures and ate good food.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I would say I have to give major props and love to my family and God, the one who steered the ship. There are times still where I have doubts and through my faith and support from my brothers and a loving mother, I am able to overcome any obstacles and self-doubt caused by irrational fears. Plus we have each others back and have many motivational conversations where don’t lament on past failures but talk about what we learned from them instead. Also I have expanded my group of friends recently and they help keep me grounded.
