We had the good fortune of connecting with J. Anders and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J., is there something you believe many others might not?
One piece of conventional advice that I disagree with is the saying “work hard and you will be successful”. Unfortunately not everyone who works hard will be successful. There are people who actually invest themselves to perfect their craft everyday and there are those who say they work hard but have the advantage of having the coveted “helping hand” from someone who has already made it in the realm of success. Then it turns into “who you know, not what you know” and defeats the purpose of working hard. It’s unfortunate because there are a lot of creative, hard working, well-deserving people out there who will not get the success they are searching for because they don’t have the appropriate “co-sign”.
How do you measure success? Is it by how many materialistic things someone has? Or is it by how much someone has accomplished now compared to last year or the year before?
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m known for being a jack of all trades. I specialize in songwriting and recording, but I’m also an actress, website designer, and content creator for social media and brand awareness. I love to paint in my downtime and design clothing.
I’ve been most proud of going to school for Audio Engineering and Post Production but in the future I’ll be most proud of when I can write, record and act full time.
What sets me apart is my talent. I don’t feel like I fit into any specific genre of music but if I had to place myself in a box it would be alternative hip-hop. I can write almost any genre of music from Rap, R&B, Neo-Soul, and Alternative.
One thing I’d like the world to know about me is, I want the opportunity to work with many different artists and grow. I want genuine lovers of music to step out of their comfort zones and stream my music because it’s real and identifiable. People tend to need a co-sign from someone who already has a reputation in this business, but I want the world to know that I’m my own co-sign, and I stand behind my work.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting we would definitely be eating everywhere lol. I’m a “foodie” to most of my friends so I’d probably take them to Puesto, Bosa Nova or Del Friscos for Brazilian food or steak. Also I’m a bit of a hookah enthusiast but all of my favorite hookah spots are in San Diego, so I think we’d take a drive on the 5 fwy and stop in La Jolla along the way. If anyone wants to hang out and eat just hit me in a DM, I’m always down lol.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m extremely grateful for my fam Chelly Jane. Seeing her consistancy in the studio, getting better at her craft made me want to deep dive into my own craft from a technical side. Chelly definitely motivated me to go to school for Audio Engineering and Post Production. I can’t thank the Sound Lounge enough for allowing me the opportunity to work in a professional space, with other likeminded professionals. Lisa Nichols has been not only a mentor but a big sister to me for over a decade. She’s taught me the power of a s.n.a.a.p (super networking at an accelerated pace) being clear, concise, powerful and quick whenever marketing myself to someone has been extremely helpful in my creative or business endeavors. My bros Elijah Estes and Niko Alexander are gurus behind a lens! They deserve credit for a few of my videos. We go back and their talent, support and hustle is amazing. I’m thankful for 8o8 Soundz, my fam, my tribe, my group. You guys keep me motivated and I’m constantly growing as an artist.
