We had the good fortune of connecting with J.T. Boyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi J.T., what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I think of risk, I simply think of it as a point of reflection. It’s an opportunity to access current life status, ultimate life goals, and all the decisions you’ve made thus far to get to the present. It’s a moment, where you’re able to ask yourself the question, “Do I still want more, do I still want better?” If the answer to that question is no, then there is nothing additional that needs to be done. If the answer to that question is yes however, then it is important you review all the data of your life, what you want to achieve, why you want to achieve it, how far/close you are to getting there and elect to choose boldness as a supplement in deciding your next steps to prevent less desired outcomes.

Taking risks have played a starring role in my life/career. Prior to understanding that risk taking requires being bold, I believed it was okay to just wait for things or expected things to be given to me. Life requires patience, but not necessarily waiting. There is always some work to be done. In discovering that no one was coming to save me, that I have to save myself from whatever circumstance I deemed personally unfit, it felt like I now had a golden ticket, magic key. cheat code, whatever you want to call it, to achieve or obtain whatever it is I want. My life is a reflection of a risk I took 12 years ago, had I not taken it, I’m sure I would be walking around unfulfilled.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m in the business of empowering people, company structure and organizations, that’s what Good Boyd Group is all about. When I look at people, places or things, one of the things I’m able to see is their potential and if they’re currently playing small. We aren’t meant to just possess potential or play small, we’re meant to be fully realized creations and embrace our own greatness. Also as a CFO of a non profit, I’m learning more about strategic planning and growth. I’ve gotten to where I am today by embracing change as well as being willing to usher it in. I’ve been a part of well established companies and several startups, the only difference (structurally) between the two I’ve noticed is the age of the business and resources, but they’re really all the same. Like most there are many things I could be doing, however I’ve only been obsessed with who I’m supposed to be. I’ve overcome the challenges in my life by enduring and remembering, time is short and my purpose has a greater purpose in the world. Once we realize that we all have a part to play in moving things forward, it will never lose its importance. Think about it like this, even in a play or movie there are lead parts, supporting parts, and behind the scenes parts. While all attention normally goes to the lead and most would want that, when it’s time for your part has to be played, and you fail, it effects the whole production. Your part is needed because without you the whole show would suffer. It’s most important we remember, there are no small people, no small parts and no small purpose. This is just one of the many lessons I’ve learned along the way and I’m proud of that. I’m also proud that on October 24th many will get the chance to read, learn and grow both professionally and personally from my newly released book, ‘In Business and In Dating: How To Navigate Relationships and Make Tough Decisions Like A Boss’. This book is my love letter to helping others achieve their goals, this is truly who I am and what my brand is.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It depends, especially if it was their first time visiting or not. Either way, I’d definitely take them to Revelation Church. We would most definitely have to sight see a bit and go to the mainstays of the city such as the beach, Hollywood walk of fame, Universal Studios, Runyon Canyon, The Grove, SoFi stadium, a Lakers game, a Dodgers game and a tour of downtown LA’s main attractions. Also a simple gathering at the house with a few good people is always a win. To eat, since the city is filled with places, here are a few of the ones that’s always batting 1000% when I go.

For Brunch:
Butcher, Baker, Cappuccino, Maker
Castaway
Sweet Butter

For Lunch:
In n Out Burger
Umami Burger
Pink’s Hotdogs
Plancha’s Tacos

For Dinner:
Nobu
Castaway (again)
Javier’s
Sunny’s Sushi Hut (small place, amazing sushi)

For Shopping:
Century City Mall
The Grove

Movie theaters:
iPic
AMC

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am the product of knowing who to listen to and when to listen to them. My family has always been a motivating force. I was born into them an inquisitive person and a lover of wisdom. I would also of course like to shoutout my wife, her existence alone has bettered me in many ways and have provide me with much laughter. I want to shout out every mentor I’ve ever had (20), in every stage of my life to especially now. The most influential books for me have been the Bible, The Magic of Thinking Big, The Alchemist, A Purpose Driven Life, and most recently How To Fly A Horse. Lastly, I also want shoutout all those along the way that have even given me an encouraging word or gesture. It has truly been put to use.
