Meet Jack Winthrop | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jack Winthrop and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jack, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
authenticity. I think as an artist you have to stay true to how you feel about the work and its progression as it pertains to your unique perspective. Especially within our current climate and the age of social media. On one hand its been a godsend as far as the reach and opportunities it can provide, on the other hand it can convolute your vision as an artist that you are creating for some algorithm and not solely for yourself. We should be able to create in secret, not worry about posting everyday, and find solace in the process of generation. Authenticity is finding a truth within your art and feeling confidence in it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My new “TOTEMS” series is like a spiritual journey and energy that is congruent to my own growth as a human being in the journey of life. It represents something within me as well as a oneness with our environment. I believe a painting can become much more than art, it has a power that conveys ideas in an intimate way. Sometimes with my work it’s as if I’m channeling an energy that I am not conscious of until I begin painting. The process of creating art has been one of my greatest teachers. It parallels life in so many ways. overcoming fear or insecurities in my paintings translates into many other areas for me. I convey a feeling, an idea, or emotion with the juxtaposition of shape and color. Actually, its very simple. There is a beauty or purity in that simplicity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Lol, well I’m def the wrong guy for that and probably the worlds laziest tour guide. I would most likely just do things with them that I like…Surf, eat, see art, and chill. Recently I took a friend to control gallery to see Connor Harringtons first show in Los Angeles. I think other than that I would just stay in Venice with them where I live. Take them to Felix, or Market or maybe Great White for a breakfast burrito, and bring them to see some live music if someone good was in town. Other than that they’re on their own.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people who have had a huge impact on me in my lifetime, collectors, family, galleries, other artists ect… I think recently its United Talent Agency and their gallery UTA Artist Space. Specifically Arthur Lewis and collector Jeremy zimmer. Arthur Lewis is the creative director/curator and partner of UTA’s Fine Arts. He has been a champion of my work giving me the opportunity to exhibit my new “TOTEMS” series there last year. We are already working on another show as well. It’s people like him that have a passion for helping artists that make success possible. I am so grateful for him and his belief in me. He is definitely one of the good ones.
