We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Tilk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jake, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting a business is something I always knew I wanted to do deep down. But it took me working jobs that I didn’t get any sense of achievement from or satisfaction for me to realize that in order to find that I needed to create something that brought me those feelings; something I was passionate about. So in creating my own business, I didn’t know everything, in fact, I still don’t know anything. But it’s getting out there and trying that matters. You will fail and you will suck at it at first, and that’s just the truth. It’s how you fail forward and learn from these experiences that matter.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Becoming a Digital Marketing Manager was not an easy task. I remember getting out of college and competing for entry level marketing jobs against people with five years of experience in the field. The problem with marketing is that it’s the first thing that companies cut when they’re doing poorly and so many people try to get into the field that it makes it incredibly competitive.
I’m most proud of myself for digging out of those trenches and demonstrating my ability to drive results. It took me working in some non-ideal situations but from each of those experiences you get to learn a lot about yourself, your work ethic, and what you want from a career.
I want the world to know that starting a business with a full time job is possible. If you want to change your life path, you need to put in the time. Keep your head down and do the research on what you need to achieve. Things that seem like roadblocks might not actually be as big of an issue as you thought once you start doing them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you haven’t visited the area, you’re missing out. The weather, the people, the culture, it’s all here. So if you were to come experience this for the very first time, you’re in for a treat. I’d start by going to the Getty Center. This will take a few hours but you can really become enriched in the culture that this museum provides, like seriously, they have Monet, Van Gogh, and some utterly stunning gardens. Next we’d attend our reservation at La Vecchia Cuchina for some exceptional Italian food and follow this up with a trip to the highly publicized Venice Beach.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
At first when starting my business, the only person I could rely on was myself. If you don’t believe in yourself and shake off the criticism of others it won’t work. But as I’ve gone along, not only have I gathered an amazing community of ‘lads’ but seeing them succeed and tell me about the things they’re learning in their entrepreneurial journeys is unparalleled. This community I’ve created with my brand truly wouldn’t be possible without all the lads that support me, run things for me on a volunteer basis, and help each other to succeed when I’m not available. Big shoutout to my most engaged community members in my Discord server.
