We had the good fortune of connecting with James Deane and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James, how do you think about risk?
I personally believe that taking smart, calculated risks are a good thing in your career. You either succeed or you learn from your mistakes which in turn will make you better and stronger. I remember at 18 years old, moving out of home with my savings to further pursue my career in dance. There were several times where I wasn’t sure if I would completely run out of my savings. However, I learnt, I adapted and I worked hard to make it to where I am today.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m all for creating your own opportunities and not just waiting for opportunities to come your way. Increase the odds of success by creating your own work and projects. Be proactive, don’t be afraid of rejection and just go for it! The worst thing they can say is no.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love shooting dance videos with my friends so we would choreograph several dance pieces together and film us dancing. Good food and good company is always a must so there would be a lot of that as well! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A large portion of my success is due to my parents support. My mum would drive me to countless classes and workshops as a kid. Needless to say, she got a lot of knitting done while waiting for me hahaha! My dad even built a small dance studio for me so that I could train my dance skills. I still use that same studio to this day to train and teach my online classes. Thanks Mum and Dad.
