Meet James Roha

We had the good fortune of connecting with James Roha and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Deciding to switch into design school was hugely important for me – it really opened up my view towards a wide range of possibilities.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a game designer who works to bring game worlds to public audiences in physical space through contemporary technologies like digital manufacturing and digital integration. It’s exciting to think that not many other people are doing work totally like this yet – it’s most similar to Meow Wolf or escape rooms, but provides a more fantastical/ world-centric experience.
Taking the work to this point has been challenging; several years of experimenting and learning a range of technologies/ modelling tools, but its also been fun and rewarding. It’s really been a marathon of continuously iterating and producing.
Most of the challenges have been balancing creative freedom with practical/ day to day realities. Its also been a challenge to explain to fully convey the concept to venues (especially before events unfolded) since nothing quite like it has happened before.
Fable X exists to stimulate community- all stemming from younger days when I realized the power of games to bring people together. There are a lot of pressures pulling people apart // I hope that Fable X can help bring people together around shared experiences that stimulate thought towards big impending issues like how ai / other new technologies are changing us.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely the taco parking lot near the Little Tokyo supermarket. The Resident is also a great place for a beer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
