We had the good fortune of connecting with Janae Kennedy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janae, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business was mostly a decision to establish my own creative outlet. I’ve worked in fashion since I was 18 but began to release the idea of searching for creative fulfillment through a corporate job. And instead it was time to create my own vision. Its conceptualization began in the midst of quarantine. During a time of sweats and athleisure everywhere you looked I longed for excitement in clothing again. Estrella was built around the idea to incorporate allure into the everyday.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Aside from Estrella my profession for the past few years has been photo and video production. I really love this aspect of the industry as well and hope to always continue in both fields. Production forces you to build a strong right/left brain balance which is something that really helps owning a small business as well.

When starting my career I worked for multiple small fashion brands. It helped me navigate which career paths to take since I had my hands on all aspects. Naturally, it came full circle and I started my own line. I now reflect back on so many things I learned in the early days of my career.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I like to spend as much time as possible in the sun. So ideally a long hike and the beach for a perfect day. Stopping by Honey Hi along the way.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friends! I’m lucky to be surrounded by so many women who have started their own brands and have encouraged me along the way. @67Jewelry, Mareperpetua, Divine_object are just a few! I’ve met so many others along the way who keep me inspired.
