We had the good fortune of connecting with Jarom Unga and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jarom, why did you pursue a creative career?
I enjoy making art that people can enjoy and it’s my outlet, my safe space. My music is a reflection of my life, my emotions, my experiences, and my thought process. It’s my therapy, a way to express myself freely in any way I want to, and people being able to resonate with my music is the reason I continue to make it. The further along I got into my career, the more I started to realize that I didn’t value the fame or the money as much as I thought I did or would. I became more sacred with my music. Instead of creating music for the audience, I create for myself. For my own personal growth.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from other artist is my style and ability to flow on different kinds of beats effectively. My voice is unique to me, and although you may catch a glimpse of other artists within my style, you’ll always know when JayRome is on a song. Being from Utah, it isn’t easy to gain the respects of audiences beyond state lines, but I’ve been blessed to be able to do things that you usually wouldn’t see an artist out here doing. I personally believe that the Utah music scene isn’t respected at all and so I took a step back from the scene out here and isolated myself with my craft and inspirations. And through the observing of other artists, I was able to see what I liked and didn’t like when it came to getting my music out there. I’m not the type of person to go out my way and force my music upon people, I’d rather it happen organically and so word of mouth became my strategy. If my music was as good as I believed it to be, then people would share it out of appreciation for the art and not the artist. At the time it seemed crazy because I had yet to release music on all platforms so I knew it would take patience and lots of self belief. But through the power of social media, all it took was for a few people, specifically from the Bay Area, to get ahold of my music and start sharing it on TikTok. Los Angeles and San Francisco quickly became my top two streaming cities across almost all platforms and although I don’t have any visuals to my music yet, I was still able to acquire a respectable amount of views. It was then that I knew that I was headed in the right direction.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I honestly don’t be doing a lot out here. I’m a homebody so I rarely go out. My first time going to a club was in San Diego with my team, and I was forced to go. But food spots is a different story. I’m a huge fan of Mexican food, and I will say that San Diego has the best Mexican food, so the closest I’ve had out here in Utah is a spot called Tacos Lopez located in my hometown of West Valley City. There’s also a Vietnamese spot in Saratoga Springs called Viet Deli. Their honey glazed pork vermicelli with egg rolls is top tier. My definition of having the best time ever is to roll up some of the dopest ganja leaf, eat some smacking food, and make music. So if you’re coming to visit me in Utah, it’s because you’re on my same wavelength and you know how I get down.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As far as the evolution of my sound goes, a couple people play a major part in that. So big shoutout to my brothers CGOCRAZY & Tali2x. Surrounding myself with those two was a pivotal point in my career. I started to develop a sound that was familiar to audiences but also separated myself from other artists. And that was thanks to making music with those two. Huge shoutout to my personal engineer Juju, he’s like a brother to me and was one of the few people who believed in me even when I found it hard to believe in myself. I also want to shoutout my agency Still In Motion, without them I wouldn’t be where I am with my career. Although my career is still in it’s early stages, the amount of progression and opportunities I’ve come across is all thanks to them.
