We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmynn Abernathy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasmynn, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
While my little one is so young, I imagine my being emotionally present for him has been the most impactful. Staying on top of my responsibilities as a working mom challenges me regularly, and I’ve done my best to be mindful of all the beautiful moments I share with my son. Taking care of my mental health by consistently doing things that refresh me and bring me joy and by accessing my support system is crucial to maintain my ability to be an emotionally present mom.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started Willow Therapy and Counseling, a private psychotherapy and counseling practice, in 2019. I named my practice after the willow tree, which is a symbol of strength and resilience. I’ve always been passionate about helping people tap into their inner strength and thrive despite the painful pasts they may have experienced. My primary focus in my practice is helping people heal their relationships with themselves and others. I strongly believe that our quality of life can drastically improve when our relationships feel solid.

Starting a business certainly didn’t come without challenges. One of the biggest hurdles I consistently overcome is my own limiting beliefs. Society at large isn’t the most encouraging toward Black women when it comes to achieving ownership. Because of that, I’ve had to challenge the doubt that I’d be able to build my version of a successful business and career, and I lean into my tenacity, courage, and spirit of excellence in what I do.

Every day, I work on pushing myself to grow beyond my comfort zone. I actively challenge the thoughts that don’t serve me so that I can expand my career not only as a therapist but also as a speaker and mental health consultant and advocate.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a hard one! LA is full of so many gems. I’d definitely make sure we eat well. We’d have to hit up The Griddle Cafe for the biggest, most decadent pancakes I’ve ever had. For some cute brunch vibes, I’d go to Openaire at The Line in Koreatown. For dinner, I’d have to pick my go-to spot for delicious, upscale Mexican food – Caló Kitchen + Tequila. Randy’s Donuts is an absolute must. I love a good coffee shop so we’d probably hang out at Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen (shoutout to Issa Rae)! I love to spend time in nature and the beach is always a great choice; Redondo Beach is one of the most chill beaches in L.A. We’d also have to catch a concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my husband, Joshua Abernathy. He’s been my biggest supporter and cheerleader as I’ve grown in my career as a mental health professional and ventured out as a business owner.
