We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Barican and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in Naples, FL, but spent most of my childhood in the Philippines and moved back here in Florida when I was around 15. Having experienced both cultures gave me the opportunity to learn various values unique to each, which also ended up influencing the music I make now having both elements common pop sounds, as well as some OPM (Original Pilipino Music) traits.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The music that I make sort of stemmed during the “bedroom pop” era, which really intrigued me before starting because I’ve always had this notion that you needed a professional team, a full studio, to be able to make good music. Seeing the emergence of various bedroom pop artists was a sort of wake up call for me, showing me that it is possible to make good music no matter the equipment, no matter the setting, and no matter the people involved in the process.

It was definitely unexpected getting to where I am now since the sunshine blvd. project was primarily my exploration into making original music for the first time. The entire goal was to be able to make at least one song that I’d be satisfied with, so I never would’ve expected to grow a following from this venture.

The main thing that I learned throughout this process is that “anything is possible.” I know it sounds common and cliche, but I’ve gone years and years telling myself I can’t make one decent song. Now I’m sitting with a few songs in my arsenal that I’d say I’m real proud of. Some other people probably could say otherwise, but it was never about any fame or financial gain, but just to prove to myself that I could do what I thought I couldn’t do.

What I want people to know about me is that the “sunshine blvd.” project is a simple project started within the corners of my own room. This whole project began with my first releases being me not knowing how to really produce music, so I’d say from the very first release, to my most recent songs is a journey in and of itself. I want people to be able to enjoy my music and put their own meanings into it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I mean living in Florida, the main thing I’d say everyone would think of would be the theme parks. Both Disney World and Universal Studios would be such a blast, and there’s more than enough activities to do when going to these parks that even a week wouldn’t really be enough if we wanted to fully experience everything

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely want to dedicate my shoutout to my family, specifically my dad, since he was the reason why I became so involved with music growing up. Being exposed with my uncles, as well as knowing about my dad’s backstory about being in a band sort of shaped me up into having music as my main interest as well.
