We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Le Compte and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After moving to California in late 99’ early 00’s there wasn’t a lot of jobs in my field. Most of LA was production based with not a lot of designers who would pay for design and modeling. That led me to putting out collections under my own brand. I remember going to trade shows and feeling the energy from the buyers and the shows. It was exciting and that energy fueled a lot of desire and passion to work hard.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
There’s so many. I’ve taken a lot of chances and ventured into a lot with different people, companies etc,.. You just never know what is going to work out unless you try. I remember years ago doing a show in NY with my previous brand. The buyers from Saks had walked by and I had no idea who they were until after and it was too late. The brand next to us had gotten the Fashion Director’s card. They let me take a pic of it and his info and I cold emailed him. He responded and we got into Saks from that. It doesn’t always work out like that, in fact it usually doesn’t but it also can. If you’re honest with yourself and with your work it will show. People will respond.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Most of my spare time is in the water and LA has a lot of great surf spots from the South Bay to County Line. Iconic ones that were written in books like “Barbarian Days” by William Finnegan. If you’ve surfed some of the north beaches, spots like Big Dume or Leo Carrillo you’ll know the coastline is pretty magical and awe inspiring. Getting there on a motorcycle is even better. And preparing food with friends in a back yard is as good as it gets.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All the experiences with people in my industry over the years, good or bad. Rich or poor. I’ve learned a lot from them all
