We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Sheng and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jason, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up in a non-musician Chinese household where entertainment careers were unheard of, I initially pursued Mechanical Engineering in college with dreams of joining the automotive industry.
While I excelled in physics and engineering exams, I struggled to find fulfillment in applying that knowledge. I yearned to create, to bring ideas to life. Midway through college, I hit a crisis where I felt disconnected from my true self and lost.
Music, however, was always my sanctuary. I started writing songs on the guitar during high school, where melodies and lyrics flowed effortlessly. It felt like the universe was channeling energy through me, and I was merely the translator. My obsession with pop songs drove me to learn from every source possible.
In essence, it was instinct that guided me. At 20, I decided to dedicate myself to music, knowing I would spend countless hours refining my craft. Despite initial doubts, my parents supported me wholeheartedly. Every summer, I’d immerse myself in music, using a computer, MIDI keyboard, and microphone to explore my emotions, relationships, and life itself. Now, I’ve turned my passion into my career as a singer-songwriter and music producer.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m Jason Sheng, a Mandarin pop artist, singer-songwriter, music producer, and music publisher. Under my name, I write, produce, and release songs in Mandarin Chinese. My single “By Your Side” reached number 1 on all Chinese platforms for three months in 2022. I released my debut album in November 2022 and am currently working on more music projects.
Additionally, I collaborate globally as a songwriter, pitching our creations to Chinese music labels and management teams. Notable successes include songs like “Slow Ride” by Lu Han, “Understood” by Jeffrey Tung, and “Fall” by Jackson Yee. My work often connects international talents with the Chinese music industry, fostering collaborations that bridge cultural boundaries.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite spots in LA is Nijiya Market. It offers a variety of prepared bento boxes, sushi rolls, and sashimi. Shopping there is convenient, and I love seeing the vibrant colors and beautiful presentation of the dishes. Another similar place I enjoy is Yama Sushi Marketplace, which focuses solely on prepared food. Their sushi and sashimi are always incredibly fresh.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Big shout-out to my parents for their unwavering support and trust. Huge thanks to EOE Studios for collaborating on some amazing creations. Special shout-out to Hai Li for believing in me when few others did. And a heartfelt thank you to my engineering and music teachers who taught me that there’s always more than one way to achieve a goal—encouraging creativity every step of the way.
