We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Initially I wanted to create a resource that would not only be beneficial for me but also for people from all over. It evolved from a IG page posting events specifically to LA to a media company. I would attend events and provide photography/video, a one man team.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ll start with saying the “the road to success is often unpaved.” Let’s just say my journey began with my need to fulfill what a felt was a void in the nightlife industry. I mean there were other pioneers in this method of promotion such as Time-out LA, LA weekly, Eventbrite , and many others but it seemed a little more mainstream. I wanted to tap into the culture on a street level and find LA’s hottest and emerging scenes. I was heavy into clubbing and partying at that time so it only made since, I would travel to events I promoted many times solo with just camera in hand. Which was a good situation because I was not only able to network with event organizers and patrons, I was also able to provide them with the service of photography or as we call it now content. Everything for me just happened organically establishing relationships, building a following, and exploring all LA had to offer. I believe if you do decide to start a business or any type of venture, have a general love or interests for it . I love music, nightlife, networking and most of all having a fun a unique time. Since launching my company in 2017, I have ventured into other lanes under WhatsPoppinLA umbrella including merch, content, film and a event venue/ retreat in Joshua Tree,CA. Which is still being developed. I still love the nightlife and event industry but since 2017 like myself has evolved. Technology has changed, the music has changed, but the love has remained the same, we all need that escape from the dog days/ rat races that that we are faced with day in day out. Its a good therapy to get out, just do it responsibly and safe.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Good question. Depending on time of year let’s just say summer, I would start with nice ocean side lunch at Paradise Cove cafe in Malibu and work our way to the city. On our travel to the city, we can stop in Santa Monica for some iconic views and photo ops, maybe grab a drink or two at The Coco Club, and for that night either hit DOT, Lost DTLA, Apt 200 LA, The LA Hangover, Room Key LA, Day Party LA, or spend the night vibing at Afrobeats To The World with Blaq Pages or vibe at Mama shelter with DJ Waligz. The possibilities are endless. There’s literally so much cool shit to do here day and night. I’m also a huge fan of history and lore that surrounds our great city from the paranormal, strange, and historical landmarks. I would suggest not only explore night life but explore everything that makes LA unique and great! The food alone is worth the trip, but that would be a whole other page lol

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
