We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazmyne Fountain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jazmyne, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve been taught is that your path is personal to you and you alone. You set your level of what success looks like to you. Sometimes in careers that are in a creative industry, we tend to get distracted by what everyone else THINKS we should do, or even by what everyone else is doing with THEIR journey. However, I feel at some point we have to go through that “comparison” phase because once your able to truly realize that it doesn’t matter what another person does or what path they are deciding to take, there is space for you. You may look around and not see how you “fit” within the industry because you don’t see people just like you, but that’s the point. YOU are meant to be that “thing” in the industry that represents people just like you, that puts people like you on the map. My career, my path, has taught me that I belong here.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
When I introduce myself, I say “ Hi, my name is Jazmyne I’m an R&B / Pop singer songwriter. I like to make music that people can cry to.” And as of recent, I have added being a professional make up artist in the LA area. I feel what sets me apart from others is that there is no limit to my creativity. If you were to ask someone what I do, it will literally be a long list of things. I love to learn, and I love to be creative in all different aspects.

To get to this point where I am today, it was and still is not easy. A lot of the new people I have met recently don’t know that I lived in Chicago for 10 years, I attended and graduated with my Bachelor of Music in contemporary, urban and popular music, from Columbia College Chicago. I studied abroad and did music in Germany for six months, and I have worked with various Grammy award winners in different genres of music.

I feel that my story could be perceived as a long and complicated journey. However, I feel I want the world to know that what you want is on the other side of fear and anxiety. Things really take time, especially good things. And a lot of the times I feel people want fast success. However, they don’t realize that as fast as you rise, could also be as fast as you fall. I feel a lot of people look at my social media and my journey in life and think that it has come easy or I don’t have challenges of my own, however, I feel that I’ve been able to overcome them by being patient, you have to be able to trust the process. I’ve definitely learned even with make up that you have to trust the process. A lot of people don’t talk about what goes into actually being a recording artist, or even a make up artist, and the ups and downs that come with that. There’s a lot of times you invest money and time, and have to chalk it up to a loss, or even a lesson learned. But essentially you have to be compassionate to yourself and trust the process of life and put in the work.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love this question! I love when new people come to LA and I get to show them my favorite spots ever. Besides showing them the famous, touristy areas, which is always a must, the first stop would have to be IN-N-OUT! haha I know, basic. But you really need to learn the secret menu and how to customize your order.

After that I would show them my secret places in the Beverly Hills, Hollywood Hill, Bel Air area. Whenever I am on the hunt to get some great pictures for content, I always just go and get lost driving around in the hills. There so many great spots that are literal GEMS of the LA area.

And then maybe to end the trip we would go along PCH and visit some of the best Malibu sights and beaches. As you may be able to tell, I’m a little bougie. I love the luxury of LA and beyond.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really want to dedicate this to my family and friends. They have been there through EVERY breakdown and breakthrough. The path of a creative is not easy, but luckily when you have people there to give insight to who you are, to be understanding and pick you up when you aren’t at your best is such a blessing and I’m so grateful for the people that are around me that each play a part in my success.
