Meet Jeanette Reza | Founder & Creative Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeanette Reza and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeanette, how does your business help the community?
I am proud to be a Minority Women Business Enterprise in New York City. The JIU JIE studio is in the East Village where I have also built my life for the past 7 years. The social impact of my enterprise is in part, being an example that our ethnic and gender background doesn’t determine what we can do culturally and as a business. My cultural output helps diversify the pretense of Mexican American objects as they are created in the United States. I think it helps to break down oppressive cliches and stereotypes about who we are supposed to be or do, because our possibilities are infinite.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Ever since my coming-of-age my expression has been through textiles and exploring different formats of how we can wear or inhabit them. I think the main thing that has set me apart is that my process is both research and concept driven but without ever disregarding the feeling. I am most excited about how the things we have can create comfort in different levels, emotionally or physically or aesthetically. I’ve gotten where I am today professionally exploring this through working on other peoples interior and fashion brands and creating my own. Some of the challenges I’ve been able to overcome are due to the resources that are available to support minority women in NYC.Ever since my coming of age my expression has been through textiles and exploring different formats of how we can wear or inhabit them. If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and seeing the different yearly fashion exhibits, then strolling down Central Park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my father, Cesar, who like millions of immigrants left his entire life in Mexico for the United States to build better opportunities for his family. Setting an example of why it matters to overcome social and language obstacles has been profoundly inspiring and something I hope to do for the incoming generations as well.
