Meet Jeff Abella | Moka Origins Co-Founder and Social Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeff Abella and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeff, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My business partner and I spent a decade living and working in Cameroon before launching our venture. During that time, we collaborated with cacao and coffee farmers who struggled to earn a fair income for their produce. Motivated by a desire to prioritize people over profits, we founded Moka to introduce a new supply chain model that puts the well-being of individuals first.
In the mainstream chocolate and coffee industries, there exists a prevailing model centered on low quality and low cost. Unfortunately, this often results in farmers bearing the heavy burden of supplying the world’s demand for inexpensive chocolate. The current system undervalues the hard work and dedication of these farmers, leaving them struggling to make ends meet. It’s imperative that we recognize the true cost of cheap chocolate and coffee and work towards creating a more equitable and sustainable supply chain that prioritizes fair compensation for farmers.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My journey began as a struggling student who found passion in the business world of audio engineering, particularly through my involvement in my father’s recording studio in Madison, Wisconsin. School never quite captured my attention as much as being actively engaged in the real world did. Observing my father’s successful management of his small business taught me a valuable lesson: positive human relationships are integral to professional success. Encouraged by my dad to seek broader horizons and make a difference, I embarked on a path that would lead me to new ventures and opportunities.
Transitioning from audio engineering to entrepreneurship, I delved into the realm of social enterprise, ultimately finding myself serving as the country director for the Himalayan Institute in Cameroon, Africa. This remarkable nonprofit organization focuses on improving education and healthcare in communities where coffee and cacao are grown.
Through my experiences in Cameroon, my passion for business found a new outlet in the emerging markets of Africa. It was there that the vision for Moka Origins began to take shape—a project aimed at enhancing the quality of beans and improving compensation for farmers. This endeavor later evolved into our chocolate and coffee manufacturing company based in the USA.
From humble beginnings as a struggling student to navigating the complexities of international business, my journey has been one of evolution, driven by a desire to make a positive impact on the world and uplift communities through entrepreneurship and social responsibility.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honesdale, PA, is a vibrant rural town boasting an exciting craft product scene on the rise. Whenever friends come to visit, my first stop is always Here and Now brewery, renowned for serving the best pizza in NEPA, crafted with a unique twist—utilizing spent grain in their crust, minimizing waste and maximizing flavor.
Following our delicious pizza indulgence, the next must-visit spot is Moka Origins, where chocolate and coffee come to life. Embarking on a factory tour and tasting at Moka Origins offers a truly distinctive experience. Witnessing the intricate process of chocolate-making firsthand is both fascinating and memorable, making it a highlight of any visit to Honesdale.
We would end with Yoga at the Himalayan Institute.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to two extraordinary individuals who have played pivotal roles in shaping my journey: Ishan Tigunait and my wife, Chelsea Abella.
Ishan Tigunait has been not just a friend and mentor, but someone who unwaveringly believed in my potential from the outset. His steadfast support and encouragement have propelled me to push beyond conventional boundaries and challenge industry norms with confidence.
Similarly, Chelsea Abella has been the catalyst for my questioning of norms and status quos. Her unique perspective and willingness to challenge conventional thinking have spurred me on to explore new ideas and approaches fearlessly.
Together, Ishan and Chelsea have been my guiding lights, empowering me to uncover the best version of myself. I am profoundly grateful for their presence in my life and the profound impact they have had on my journey.
