Meet Jeffery Tay | Musician & Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeffery Tay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeffery, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Guangzhou, China, the third largest city in the southern part of the country. I was born in a small rural town near the seaside, a conservative and undeveloped city that shaped my early experiences. Growing up in a conservative and strict environment was tough, especially as someone who identifies as LGBTQ. My childhood in that small town was marred by bullying and negative memories. My family, not particularly warm, had strict and harsh expectations, especially concerning traditional gender norms. Music became my refuge. Despite my parents’ disapproval, I spent most of my time with my piano. Unfortunately, societal expectations were such that even my passion for the piano was considered “girly” by my parents. This made it difficult for me, as they seemingly favored my older brother, who adhered more to traditional gender roles. I focused on my studies, determined to escape my hometown. I worked hard to gain admission to a top music college in the nation, and at the age of 18, I began my journey as a professional musician. After graduating, I signed with an agent, releasing two albums during my time with them. I aimed to use my music to speak for the LGBTQ+ community and help those who, like me, faced struggles in their youth. Unfortunately, the strict censorship of LGBTQ topics in my country hindered my efforts. Despite my desire to be a voice for the queer community, I couldn’t openly address these issues. Frustrated and disappointed, I made the difficult decision to leave China in 2018 and move to Los Angeles, seeking an environment that would allow me to express my thoughts and ideas freely through my music. This journey has molded me into who I am today – an Asian LGBTQ musician. Independent and unaccompanied, yet vulnerable and brave. I want to be the umbrella for others, having once been caught in the rain myself. My experience fuels my commitment to creating music that embraces diversity and advocates for a more understanding society.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a singer-songwriter, my artistic journey has been a testament to my unwavering passion for music. From the age of 16, I’ve penned countless songs, releasing two albums, along with 24 singles and EPs. Reflecting on my childhood, my pursuit of music was unconventional. While most kids were guided by their parents in their extracurricular activities, I demanded piano lessons at the age of 10 against my dad’s initial resistance. To pursue my passion, I attended lessons secretly with financial support from my mom, who requested I keep it from my dad. It wasn’t until I clinched first place in a piano competition that my dad became supportive.
However, my journey took a tumultuous turn when I decided to make music my career. My family, including my brother, vehemently opposed my choice, leading to a painful eviction from home at the tender age of 16. Despite enduring two days of homelessness, I returned home, apologizing and kneeling before my parents. Two years later, I faced another challenge when seeking permission to audition for a music college. Overcoming familial resistance and navigating a new city, I secured a spot at the college, showcasing my determination to pursue my passion despite familial objections.
Choosing a career without family support is undeniably tough, but I persevered. Years of participation in talent shows and TV appearances finally earned my family’s pride. Signing with an agent provided financial support, enabling me to make a living through music. The lessons learned on this journey are profound – stepping out of one’s comfort zone, embracing bravery, and proving one’s worth through hard work.
I want the world to know me as an Asian LGBTQ musician who has faced challenges from traditional norms, familial expectations, and societal pressures. Despite the adversities, I remain positive, creating music, and dancing in the rain. My hope is that my story inspires others, and I aspire to reach more people through my music, sharing the strength that comes from resilience and self-expression.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were embarking on a week-long adventure in LA, I’d curate an unforgettable itinerary to showcase the city’s vibrant culture. Our journey would commence with the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame, exploring not just the stars on the sidewalk but also significant landmarks like the Chinese Theatre. As a cherry on top, a visit to The Musicians Institute, my school, would provide a personal touch to our Hollywood experience.
A hike to the Hollywood sign, offering breathtaking views, would be a must, especially during sunset. The Griffith Observatory, with its enchanting golden hour and panoramic city lights after dark, would transport us into the magic of movies, reminiscent of “La La Land.” Santa Monica Pier, filled with lively attractions, and a leisurely bike or scooter ride to the picturesque Venice Beach, where the movie “Barbie” was filmed, would capture the essence of California’s coastal charm.
Venturing into West Hollywood, we’d immerse ourselves in the vibrant gay culture, exploring gay bars, catching mesmerizing performances by gogo boys, and sipping on potent cocktails. The energy and diversity of West Hollywood would undoubtedly leave an indelible impression on my friend.
No LA experience is complete without the thrills of theme parks. A day at Universal and Disneyland would provide a perfect blend of excitement and nostalgia, creating lasting memories.
Turning our attention to culinary delights, we’d embark on a flavorsome journey, starting with authentic Mexican tacos from a local truck – a taste sensation not easily found in Asia. And, of course, an obligatory visit to In-N-Out Burger, a local specialty that every LA first-timer must indulge in.
This meticulously planned itinerary encapsulates the essence of LA – a city that seamlessly blends entertainment, culture, and diverse culinary experiences. The goal is to leave my best friend with not just memories but a deep appreciation for the multifaceted beauty of Los Angeles.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely, there’s more than one person who has played a pivotal role in shaping my journey – my chosen family. First and foremost, I want to shout out Eric. We go way back to high school, sharing the same dorm and countless moments discussing our passions for music and English. Eric, my most knowledgeable friend, introduced me to a plethora of movies and artists that enriched my artistic journey. Despite my initial fear of coming out to him due to his straight orientation and Catholic background, when I finally did, his open-minded acceptance gave me the courage to face the world and embrace my authentic self.
Next up is Jade, my sweet homie, and I’m her first gay bestie. We connected at a TV show audition, and despite her rise to nationwide celebrity status, she has remained a steadfast friend, inspiring me to be proud of who I am. Jade, with her unwavering support, has not only been a source of joy but also a significant contributor to my growing music career. And yes, a big shoutout to all my followers who joined the journey through her – the power of friendship and shared laughter is truly remarkable.
Last but certainly not least, Alex, the latest addition to this incredible trio. Initially, I misunderstood his kindness, thinking he might be gay, but he turned out to be a true friend who went above and beyond. From surprising visits to secret flights for birthday celebrations and graduation ceremonies, Alex has shown me the depth of friendship and selflessness. His gestures, including a round-trip flight ticket, demonstrated that I am worthy of love, even if it’s not romantic. These three remarkable individuals, scattered across the distance in China, consistently keep in touch, teaching me valuable lessons. One taught me to accept myself, another to be proud, and the third to love myself.
They are not just friends; they are family. Successful in their own right – a businessman, an actress, and an entrepreneur – they serve as my role models, proving that success knows no boundaries. I am immensely proud of them and grateful for the love and guidance they’ve provided throughout my journey.
