We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Temperley and Robin Lyon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
In the beginning, we both were all about achieve, achieve, achieve, drive drive drive – checking all the boxes along the way and being very dedicated in our fitness endeavors. We were focused on getting from point A to point B without a clear direction or purpose. Our perspectives are very different now as getting older has made us wiser and more mindful! We recognize how much we have control over how we spend our time, and what is really important to us. We have used our years of experience and further education to approach life from a “whole health” perspective, both mentally and physically. Our joy comes from living mindfully, whereas previously we just kept pushing ourselves without hesitation.

We have observed our culture’s focus on over-consumption of everything: information, food & drink, social media, and material things. It can be very overwhelming! By taking inventory on how you spend your time, recognizing what your values and visions are, and looking at ways you can simplify your life, change habits, you can live a healthier, less stressful life. Even though there are days that appear out of balance, and we have plenty of curve balls that are thrown our way, we can regroup by checking back in with our values and vision. We become better at connecting with our WHY. When we remember our WHY, and put our mental and physical health first, we can handle the highs and lows, and as time goes on, we build resiliency and find balance.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our business, Fly Health + Wellness, is a coaching business that sees the need to address the whole person in all the areas of health. Our approach to coaching uses the following framework to help people to be:

Proactive vs. reactive when it comes to their health
Focused on long term lifestyle habits vs. short term fixes
Capable of making choices based upon their values and vision
Empowered in making their own choices
Purposeful and mindful
Resilient and balanced

Ultimately, we want people to find optimal health and wellness that is sustainable, manageable and rewarding.

What are we most excited about? Helping people reconnect with their “WHY” and finding joy in leading a healthy lifestyle. There is nothing more satisfying than people connecting with their own innate wisdom and realizing their mind and body have the power to heal themselves, and reach their life goals.

How did you get to where you are today business-wise? We have led parallel lives since college and realized we were stronger together!! Individually, we have been coaching endurance athletes and personal training clients for over 15 years. Now, we can bounce ideas off one another, support one another, and make a path to grow our business on all the levels we have dreamt about. Although we both live by the same general philosophies, we have different strengths that we bring to the table!

The business part has been challenging! It’s very different launching a business now versus 20 years ago. Social media, marketing, business structure, policies, various software methods – everything – it can be very overwhelming, and at our age, a big learning curve! We are practicing what we coach – resiliency and patience!

Clients can have a hard time understanding that the process takes time, commitment. Just because people are ready and want to make changes, doesn’t necessarily mean they do, and that it will happen overnight. We have them access their readiness but it doesn’t always translate into action. But when it does – that is where the bread and butter is! That is success! We see it happen every day – you put your priorities first, you stop doing the things that don’t lead to your goals, and BOOM – you learn how to live the everyday better.

What do you want the world to know about your brand and story?
In today’s busy world, it is not uncommon for people to find themselves out of balance and failing to meet their personal wellness goals. At Fly Health + Wellness, we provide direction and motivation to help people regain balance, find potential, and ultimately obtain clarity in their life. We act as a catalyst for transformation by establishing long lasting systems to help our clients meet and maintain their goals. By taking time to slow down and establish these systems, we can ultimately empower each individual to live a healthy life. When you grow, transform, and spread your wings…you FLY. When you FLY, you feel free and in control, empowered and strong. These are all ideas we embody in our own lives as well as in our coaching.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would do lunches at Luci’s at the Orchard and Ingo’s Tasty Food, and do hot yoga at Radi8 a few times. Definitely dinners at Chelsea’s Kitchen and El Charro. We would do a few hikes like Tom’s Thumb, Two-Bit peak, and Sunrise Trail. All with amazing views of the valley! We would probably go down to Tempe and walk around Tempe Town Lake at sunset and then hit The Yard for a cocktail. Take stand up paddle boards down the Gila River and have a beer at The Coach House!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We continue to receive support from our family, as well as our friends who have been a big part of our lives the past 25+ years. Last year we had a client and dear friend, Jen Gueniot, who convinced us that we should join forces together and create a business surrounding all the things health and wellness (now Fly Health + Wellness). Sometimes you just need that added “push” to make the leap to chase your passion!
