We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenaé Steele and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jenaé, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Helping people, including myself. I got my start just wanting to educate my creative friends in the industry about IP and their rights. On top of that, I’ve always worked in the entertainment industry, but I haven’t always been able to find employment where I am most passionate – the music industry. I have had a lot of opportunities to learn, as I’ve found my way through this industry. I just want to make someone’s path a little easier than mine has been.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I truly have a love and appreciation for music, specifically R&B, but good music is good music. I come at this industry from a place of passion and a genuine desire to help creatives anyway I can. I’m proud of the fact that I’m multi-faceted and the people that I work with get to benefit from the full range of my knowledge and experience. The knowledge and experience that I have today came from years of having a clear goal in mind and figuring out the path along the way through books, mentors, and trial and error. It hasn’t been easy but I can say that it has been an interesting and exciting path. I feel like I’m just getting started. However, I do look forward to more opportunities of sharing my experience with others with the hope of it being easier for someone else. That’s really what it is about. None of us got here on our own. We should all do our best to help someone else.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to eat at Blaqhaus Noho and Joey (any location but usually DTLA). Different great vibes with great music and food. Blaqhaus Noho is southern/cajun food and Joey focuses on steak and sushi. The Ace Hotel DTLA, especially, the rooftop is another great place for food and a nice vibe. I love to go to Black on the Block or Black Market Flea. Its just the best way to see and support local black vendors while being immersed in the community, delicious food, and once again more music. Malik Bookstores is a gem -a black-owned bookstore with two locations, Culver City Mall and Crenshaw. Also, I’m an adrenaline junkie so sometype of theme park, either Six Flags or Knott’s Berry Farm.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, God. That foundation of faith makes me unshakeable in an industry where it’s difficult to feel secure sometimes. Second, my family who always has supported me even though they don’t always quite understand why I do what I do or what I do. Third, GODY Ent. (www.godyent.com) because they gave me an opportunity to do what I love, when I was fresh out of law school. Finally, thank you to every single mentor, artist, creative, who I’ve met along the way that either saw something in me they wanted to nurture or gave us the opportunity to grow together.
