We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenna Alcala and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenna, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
My definition of success has varied wildly over the course of my life but I’ve settled on this version for now…
Success is a fulfilled, peaceful and balanced life. It is evenly weighted in all the areas that matter- career, family life, spirituality, connecting with nature, great friends, travel and adventures, and for me especially- getting to being creative and inspired.
I believe that energy is our greatest resource. My personal success arises from being super hyper-focused on my select few priorities and letting everything else go.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
During my pursuit of degrees in International Business and Marketing in Hawaii, I unexpectedly stumbled upon the world of photography, and it immediately captivated me. I was drawn to the glamour and allure of the industry—the grand sets, the intricate lighting, and the dance with clients. Every aspect fascinated me, and I fell in love with it all. It was then that I realized I could become a part of this world through production.
Being involved in production allowed me to witness the entire process unfold—from nurturing relationships with agents, estimating budgets, hiring crews, running sets, to lighting and directing a photo shoot. Simultaneously, I started shooting on my own, honing my skills and developing my unique style. Over time, I became confident that I could take the leap and turn my passion for photography into a career.
Now, over a decade later, I feel incredibly grateful that photography has become my livelihood. Throughout my journey, I’ve learned to embrace my natural style and the way I perceive the world. My perspective remains consistent and authentic to who I am. I have realized the importance of not trying to emulate someone else but instead cultivating my own distinct voice.
As time has passed, my style has evolved, and my interests in subject matter have shifted. However, one thing remains constant—my images always look like mine. I’ve come to understand that it’s essential to own your style and embrace it wholeheartedly. There is a place in this industry to be yourself.
My advice to aspiring photographers is to celebrate your individuality and embrace your style unapologetically. Your unique perspective and artistic voice are what set you apart. Allow your style to evolve naturally and follow your creative instincts.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To be clear, I am not based in LA. I live in beautiful Santa Cruz now. However, I did a brief stint in Culver City many moons ago (before it was hip) and I come down for work at least 10x a year. I love so much about LA, especially the Venice area. Venice is a fun balance of the beach lifestyle, quirky artists and some of the best restaurants. You can’t go wrong stopping at Dudley Market and trying their crudo or sipping wine on the patio of Paloma. Anytime I stroll down the canals, I dream of owning a little beach shack there. I also like watching the skateboarders tear it up at the Venice Skate Park, especially the kiddos! This part of LA feels so quintessentially California to me. I love it.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The American Photographic Artists (APA) played such a significant role in my photography career. Attending their events in San Francisco for over a decade allowed me to connect with a diverse community of creatives and build meaningful relationships. Networking with like-minded individuals in the industry was so instrumental in opening up new opportunities, sharing knowledge, and gaining inspiration. Some of my best friends and creative partners today are from those APA meet-ups back in the day- I miss those wine and cheese mixers in the Dogpatch!
