We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Le and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I knew that I was equipped with the skills and knowledge to carry out my job and to do it well. However, it was my lack of a formal business education that caused me to have reservations. I knew how to be a publicist, but it was the legal, financial, and operational aspects of it, that I was not as well-versed in. However, I trusted that I would learn and seek help from the right people along the way. I figured that if I start at 25, then, by the time I’m 30, I will have had the time and space to learn what I needed to learn, and hopefully, will have mastered these areas by then.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m the owner of FIM Agency LLC, a boutique PR agency based in Orange County, California. I specifically work with consumer, tech, and culinary brands, helping businesses gain traction, increase their exposure, and generate more sales as a result of earned media coverage. Everyone wants to get featured in a top tier publication, but the work done behind-the-scenes is laborious and requires effort across an extended amount of time. However, I’m proud to say that I’ve cultivated the right relationships along the way to help me do what I do and to do it well. In business, sometimes, exchanges can feel transactional. People can quickly spot when someone is being disingenuous. If you take shortcuts, you’ll find that you won’t be able to get very far. I pride myself in being someone who puts people first over profits. Because of this, I can say that my business is built upon loyal relationships that I’ve created with my clients over time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is so much beauty to be found in Orange County! If my friend was visiting for a week, I’d take them to Pacific City in Huntington Beach, where we can grab lunch at one of my absolute favorite spots, Bear Flag Fish Co, which has the best seafood in town that I’ve tasted. I love this outdoor mall because we can get food or drinks and then, spend the entire day at the beach afterwards. Everything you’re looking for is at your fingertips. I’d also take them on a day trip to West LA, which is about a 40-minute drive away. I love going for a stroll from Venice Beach to Santa Monica on the boardwalk. You’ll see interesting artwork while meeting people from all walks of life. Then, I’d want to get lunch from KazuNori in Santa Monica, a must-visit spot for the best handrolls you will have had in your entire life. If we had some extra time, I’d want to visit the Griffith Observatory for the gorgeous views at night.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother is someone that has always supported me in my dreams and endeavors. She gave me space and freedom to pursue what I wanted and figure out independently the kind of person that I was molding into. I never felt pressured or obligated to pursue a certain career path for external reasons or due to societal expectations. All I had to do was figure out what it was that excites me and pursue that. I aspire to be the same kind of parent. In terms of a resource, Michelle Obama’s book, “Becoming,” inspired me deeply. It’s refreshing to see someone of such a high caliber of success be transparent, open, and proud of their beginnings. Maybe we will have never fully arrived, but we are always on the journey of “becoming.”
