We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Roach and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Whenever people ask me about my career, I am always astonished at how all of the seemingly random jobs I’ve had have been leading me to starting my own business. I started in retail in Texas, specifically selling wedding gowns, and continued to grow my book of business until plateauing (after 20+ years) on Rodeo Dr. I eventually parlayed my love of organizing my retail Clients’ closets into a job working as a personal assistant for a fabulous billionaire! That was the job that truly taught me how to have the foresight to solve problems before they could potentially happen. I still felt like I wasn’t helping people enough so I became an admissions advisor at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising after meeting the inspirational founder of FIDM, Toni Hohberg! I loved helping students realize that they could make a living doing the things they were passionate about, but I started to wonder when that would happen for me.
After a long career of lifting others up, I decided to take the plunge and start Organization Fabulous at 43 years old. I moved into my BFFs little son’s room, bought a 2000 Honda Accord, and set out to make a name for myself! It was only 2 weeks into starting OFab that I found my first Client who was selling her home and needed organizing. I’ve moved her 3 times and her family even more since then. I now want to expand OFab to offer franchises nationally and help other women who maybe don’t have the resources or even the self esteem to consider running their own business. If I can create a business based on my passion for organizing people, then you can too!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We love to help people make their homes and offices more livable and functional, planning around their lifestyles, to implement professional decluttering and custom organization systems that will make their lives easier and less stressful. We also help our Clients pack, move and unpack – and moving can be among the most stressful things people do.
Whatever phase of life they are going through, our goal is always to help our Clients have FUN even while making these sometimes painful decisions.
Change is hard and changing one’s home – even if it helps – can be a deeply personal process. We are there with our Clients every step of the way and they can trust us to actually make it a fun undertaking! (No, really.)
Everything is possible, even when things look the darkest. If you can control only one thing in your life, make it be the way you feel about yourself and your home. Once your home is organized, you have your place of respite that will help you to handle anything life throws your way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Whenever I have friends in from out of town, I have a special “La La Land” tour I take them on. I love the diversity of this city and I celebrate the eclectic melting pot that made me want to move here in the 90’s! First stop is Hollywood, driving by the walk of fame and then into Los Feliz to Beachwood Canyon to see the Hollywood sign!
I also love taking friends to up to Griffith Observatory (plus they have such an amazing space exhibit there that ties me to my Mom’s days at NASA). A must stop is Neiman’s Bar on 4 for the best turkey chili and French martinis this side of the Pecos! I then take a drive down Sunset Blvd (while listening to my “I Love LA” mix tape and playing “Babylon Sisters” by Steely Dan for the desired effect of the line “drive west on Sunset to the sea…”) to end up at the Sunset Marquis Hotel for happy hour drinks!
My passion is music so the closer I am to Laurel Canyon and the amazing rock-n-roll history of The Sunset Marquis, the better my life feels! Plus SM is the place where rock legends go to live while roaming the city – and it even has an underground recording studio so you know the music is flowing above, below, and all around you at all times.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother and grandmother.
The daughter of a single mother, I learned at an early age that helping others achieve their goals fulfills me. When I was born in 1969, my teenaged mom held me while watching the moon landing and dreamed of one day working at NASA. With hard work and persistence – and the help of many other women – she was able to make that dream come true. Because of this and many other reasons, my Mom is my hero.
My Grandma is our whole family’s inspiration. A nurse who served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in WWII, she picked up and moved to the unknown world of Texas and worked for the next 40 years in Houston hospitals. She was very hard-working but always made work fun. I get my approach to life – and work – from her.
Anytime I got depressed about a situation that I could not control, my Grandma would say “Let’s plan a trip! or “Let’s have a party!” to offer a positive distraction and make me feel productive. Her teaching me positivity and a different perspective is why I incorporate having fun into any job, especially the difficult ones – like organizing/decluttering homes or packing and moving.
