Meet Jeremy Patsy | Director / Filmmaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeremy Patsy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremy, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
I believe that continuing every day to make the decision of never giving up on my dream & to make art that can be timeless but still a part of me & vulnerable in a way, has very much brought forth my success. The minute you decide to pursue not just the career that you want, but also the type of work, art, stories you prefer to tell, is the minute you will begin to elevate in your career. If it brings you the most joy, the most fulfillment, that is what you should be reaching towards. And you WILL get there.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have created films since I was 7 years old. The moment my late father Todd, placed his CanonAE1-program in my hand and clicked the shutter, I was hooked. That moment actually began my journey as well as my style/brand in everything I do. I love to create art that feels like home, has a nostalgic nature to it. In a world that is obsessed with new technology, AI and the newest camera, I prefer to shoot my art on film, whether that’s Super8, 16mm or 35mm. Not just my films but also my photography as well on 35mm and 120 film. My favorite film to shoot on is Kodak200. I still shoot on that CanonAE1-program that my father gave to me so many years ago. This leads me to my newest project, my 1st feature film, titled Heart of a Patsy. It is a coming of age story of my father in the 80s becoming a 1st in state wrestler in my home of Washington State. I wrote the screenplay back in 2020 during covid, when I had a lot more time on my hands. It is my most personal and powerful story I have ever told. We are in very early Pre-Production now and we are working on funding, crewing up, casting and even locking locations in Washington State. It was definitely a journey to get to where I am now but I wouldn’t change it for the world and I know I have still so far to go. If you are not in love with the journey of being an artist you are in the wrong field. The journey might even be the best part, in my opinion. I was able to get to where I am now by simply just creating as much as I can. Every single day, pick up a camera, write a story or an idea down. Keep moving forward. I have learned that nobody will believe in you or your work, at all, you are going to have to be the one to push it through to the end. However I am blessed to have formed a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ back in 2022 and my life has never been the same since. He has backed me like no other, he has pushed me like no other and Blessed my life more than anyone will ever know. If anyone can take just 1 thing from me and my art and my story, its this, continuously and unapologetically be yourself, create the art YOU want to create, tell the story YOU want to tell, take the trip that YOU want to take. Your life is yours, your art is yours and nobody can tell a story like YOU. Your individuality is your power, your humanity and imperfections are your strength, go out and never stop creating.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting where I live in Los Angeles California for a week I would take them to so many places. My wife and I love nature, but most importantly the beach. On our way over to water however I would drive them through Topenga Ca, this is by far my favorite hidden away “small town feeling” town around LA that does not feel in LA. We would stop and eat at Cafeon27 and enjoy a lunch in the trees. Then head down to Topenga Beach and surf for a few hours and just chill on the beach. Once rested from the beach I would take them over to Abbot Kinney in Venice to walk the shops and grab some dinner over at In&Out because it is a California staple and I am not sorry to say I eat there way too much with my wife. I would also bring them over to Costa Mesa area and enjoy my favorite coffee shop Daydream Cafe as well as a lot of vintage thrift shops I love to go to in that area. Next we would go find the closest BOBA spot because it is my guilty pleasure and would probably go to AMC to enjoy a movie, I watch movies all the time, probably almost 1 a day. I would defiantly take them on a few of my favorite hikes around LA area such as Runyon and the Hollywood sign hike, just to give them a small taste of tourist activities. Last thing I would do is to bring them to my buddy Chris’s Pizza shop in North Hollywood for the BEST pizza in LA, shout out Ozzy’s APizza. Then the last night I would take them up to a gorgeous lookout I know of off of the Kanan exit on the 101, on the way to Malibu to watch the sun go down. Trust me, it would be an amazing trip.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout and recognition to my wife, Kayla Patsy. She is my biggest cheerleader in everything that I do, even when I am not. She continues to lift me up no matter what happens in my life as a creative. She understands how I think because she is an artist herself and I know that God put her in my life for a very special and specific reason. I am immensely blessed by her everyday. Thank you my love, for everything.
