We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeremy Somers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeremy, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
It’s massively shifted from one end of the spectrum to the other. In my twenties it was work work work – I did not much else – and I loved it! After moving to LA and forcing ourselves to explore and experience everything LA had to offer – I just had this realisation that THAT was what life was actually about. After having my first child, it was even more pronounced a feeling, so much so that my balance is wayyy weighted on the other side of the scale now, and I focus on doing the minimum effective dose of work time, and being super productive in the time I do work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my design career in my bedroom whilst at university studying photography. I started by looking at something I loved and trying my best to recreate it with the tools I had at hand – Photoshop 6 and a bubble imac! After I Understood the HOW – I could apply my own ideas and concepts and use the new tools and skills I’ve learned.

And now, having designed for so many years, and designed many products and car interiors and fashion and sunglasses and websites and a million other things – my process really isn’t so different. Inspiration is the key to all creativity – no matter what form it takes. Of course, my skillset is a lot more varied now, but I always start with an inspiration board.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve actually done this a few times and have a great little itinerary of fave things! In no particular order: Riding from Santa Monica to MB along the beach.
Food Truck fiesta – as many as we can find!
Hiking Will Rogers, then Fish Tacos at the Reel In and Sunset on the beach at Malibu
Downtown art galleries and MOCA, with a meal in Little Tokyo
Walking Venice – the canals, Abbot Kinney and the boardwalk
Live music downtown or at one of so so many awesome music venues in Hollywood
finding the best pizza, doughnuts, ice cream and coffee – always a good time!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve found it’s often the unsung heroes and behind the scenes support system that ends up meaning the most. A family and parents who were with me every step of my journey no matter what I decided I wanted to do or approach. Looking back now, that’s a massive factor in your subconscious effort to conquer the world – subtle support given with unconditional love – it taught me a lot about being a boss and parent.
