Meet Jermarie Dizon | Musician, Educator, & Creative

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jermarie Dizon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jermarie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As cliche as it is, music has always been there for me in its every shape and form. Learning about it, listening to it, creating it, performing it, sharing it–all of it is simultaneously healing, comforting, and cathartic to me. It’s something that I have to do, or my soul will suffer. With everything that music is for me, I hope to help and inspire others to unlock the same for themselves.
I decided to start my own private lessons business because I believe that my knowledge and experience in music is valuable, and I wanted to present it in my own way. Before going off on my own, I had to meet deadlines, teach with specific guidelines, and recruit and maintain a certain number of students. This took away energy I could contribute to the quality of my teaching and watered down my passion for helping others because of how mentally exhausting it constantly was, especially with how much time I felt was consistently wasted. I believed that if I had more control over who I worked with and when/how often I worked, I could provide a better quality experience for myself and my students.
Aside from teaching, I have other creative endeavors such as my band Sadden and streaming on Twitch. I wasn’t there at the formation of Sadden, but I joined the group thinking that their existing sound was unique and different from anything I was creating at the time. I was inspired to explore the unfamiliar, and I had a consistent feeling that we would make something special together. I discovered Twitch during the 2020 lockdown, and decided to stream music to help people (and myself) feel less alone.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I hope that I can make a lasting impact everyone that crosses paths with me or my work, and that it transcends past the music. A big part of why I create and teach is to make what music has done for me accessible to everyone. Learning about it, listening to it, creating it, performing it, sharing it–all of it is simultaneously healing, comforting, and cathartic to me; it makes me feel like I’m living and not just existing. That’s what I want to help everyone experience. As long as I’m leaving something positive or helpful behind in some capacity, it makes everything I’m doing all the more worth it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I honestly wouldn’t be the best person to show someone around the city since I’m 90% a homebody, but I do have my favorite spots! Teamaster, Tilt, Cafe De Mama, and Basil & Cheese are my go to cafes for lattes and matcha. Sun Nong Dan is a great food experience while Prince St. would be mandatory. A Sofar Sounds show and hiking (probably Runyon) would definitely be on the itinerary. Little Tokyo is probably my favorite area to hang around.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to everyone who’s been along for the journey – this is for Sadden, my day 1 supporters on Twitch, and of course my friends and family! These people in my life have shown me so much love for simply being myself and immense support for everything I’m pursuing.
