We had the good fortune of connecting with Jesika von Rabbit and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jesika, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Watching my cat RoRo von Rabbit drink water out of the kitchen sink faucet every morning.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Nothing really comes easy in this business, you have to fight tooth and nail for every little thing but we all need a purpose in life and I thoroughly enjoy writing and recording music. I am currently finishing up a new album to be released later this year but will be dropping singles starting in May. Something about my specific style of music is that I don’t really stick purely to one genre’. I love so many different styles of music, I find it quite difficult to only pick one, so I don’t.
If I may quote my good friend and writer Roy Jurgens, “Mind-bending, sexy, weird, medicated, and endearing, von Rabbit’s art is a blast of candy cane shrapnel full of utter madness, brilliance, and complexity. Intelligent and whimsical, vulnerable and sarcastic, ironic and riotous, her lyrical content is one of the observer, the questioner, and the contrarian. Yet at heart, she’s a pop artist, one with the guts to take musical risks you wished that Top 40 pop princesses had the guts to make.”
I’m pretty excited that I recently got to perform the National Anthem at Acrisure Arena in Thousand Palms for the Coachella Valley Firebirds, and I currently have a song from my former band Gram Rabbit being used in a commercial for Fox’s The Masked Singer. I look forward to performing the National Anthem for other teams, it was quite an exhilarating experience!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A week in the city would go like this… We’d start at the Santa Monica Pier for some Skee Ball at Pacific Park amusement park, then head to Casa Del Mar, a historic Santa Monica hotel overlooking the ocean.
Hollywood! Grauman’s Chinese Theater to see the footprints of the stars, vegetarian Mediterranean food at Joseph’s cafe, and a visit to the mammoth Amoeba Records store, where I check to make sure my two albums are in stock. We’d cruise down the Sunset Strip then head to Hotel Cafe where Americana music prevails, and after, hit The Burgundy Room, “the oldest and darkest bar in Hollywood ” to meet up with friends.
Midweek we visit the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where we spend most of the day wandering around looking at the graves and crypts of the famous and not-so-famous. After, we drive to Wacko/Soap Plant/La Luz de Jesus Gallery in East Hollywood a combined gift shop, book store, and art gallery where we run into some friends whom we join for dinner at the all-vegan Green Leaves in Los Feliz.
Art and Nature await in San Marino at the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens. On the way back we drive through Pasadena, over the “suicide bridge”, and to Eagle Rock for some Mexican Food at Senior Fish.
A trip to Downtown L.A. always combines a bit of wonder, amusement, and danger. On the way, we hit Chinatown the Garment District, the 2nd Street Tunnel, and the 6th Street Bridge, both famous for commercials, TV, and film shoots. In the eve it’s The Redwood Bar and Grill for dinner and live music! After, we drive by the Cecil Hotel and snap some photos while discussing the bizarre and downright creepy history of the structure and its past inhabitants.
A three-mile hike around the Griffith Observatory gives us some exercise and a fantastic view of Los Angeles, the a drive around The Hollywood Hills for a look at some of the most stunning houses in Los Angeles!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a shout out to my bass player Lee Joseph. He helps me keep things rolling and encourages me to keep on believing in myself even when I’m feeling a little hopeless. Lee also comes up with some pretty enchanting bass lines to compliment my musical compositions. Lee runs a record label called Dionysus and he’s a DJ with an impressive collection of rare 45’s.
