We had the good fortune of connecting with Jess Fowler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jess, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking is the key to getting where I am today. I’ve recently invested in a in-home studio space that cost 4x the amount I was paying for my previous space. Years before that I dropped my relationship, the jobs I had, and bought a car just so I could fit all my stuff and drive solo to California. Many risks I’ve taken weren’t the smartest in many ways but I don’t regret any of them. Even if some came with a negative outcome I was able to learn lessons that gave me the tools to succeed today.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art comes in many forms but it is all connected. I am a videographer, photographer, dancer, influencer, and overall content creator that focuses on the LGBT+ community. I moved back to LA to focus on providing these services for the people who need it most. Women of color in my circle who are extremely talented are the top features of my work. I love what I do because it’s a win-win where the money we exchange stays in the community. I was able to get into this position by networking and have done so for years. None of it was easy and it doesn’t get easier; it’s just about finding a balance to make sure you are good first.
My brand KIILLEM also produces merch that takes on the style and quality of ‘Calvin Klein’ but with a Japanese style twist. Everything that I produce wether it is video content or clothing, reflects my personal style, artistry and image.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a very good host here in Los Angeles and I have taken guests all over the city to show them what the city is truly like. West Hollywood is a must for all things gay with daytime drinking, shopping, and nightlife. Cabo cantina is the best spot for a casual time and some good Mexican eats. It’s also the best place to keep drinking after the club. Down the street is the abbey and the chapel where I occasionally dance during Vanity Womens night on Wednesday. Then sightseeing at the Griffith observatory, the famous Hollywood sign hike, and my favorite hike at eton falls to see a waterfall. If we’re feeling adventurous we could go two – three hours away to San Diego or Vegas. There’s also beautiful sights in Malibu and the classic Venice Beach.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I work with a company called Taste Entertainment that hosts exclusive events for queer women. We have taken over spots all over LA providing some of the best entertainment, nightlife, and opportunities for all women in our community. This team and our supporters are family and it’s been a blessing to be a part. I owe so much to my friend, my family and the owner of Taste Ent. DJ P-Nasty who is the best DJ in LA!
