We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessa Grace and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessa, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I am a lifelong creative with a passion for making things by hand. Ever since I can remember I have had the need to express myself through an artistic medium. I knew my future would involve self expression but I did not know in what capacity until one afternoon and a lightning bolt of inspiration. I accidentally stumbled upon the Los Angeles Fashion District about seven years ago and my life has never been the same!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My designs are born from what I personally seek in a clothing item; Undeniable style, comfort & versatility that accentuates individuality. A piece that can be worn all day, dressed up or down, and is ethically made. The main thing I want to express in my work is that Individuality is power.
My current focus is designing and making custom pieces for stage performers. There’s nothing like seeing someone express their art while wearing a piece that I made specifically for them.
Teaching myself how to design and sew was certainly a challenge. I am dyslexic and there is a lot of math involved with pattern making which is the hardest part for me. It has been a gift, in the end, to push through the struggles because now I know exactly how to conquer a situation if I ever get stuck.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visiting LA for the first time one of our first stops would be The Last Bookstore. I could be there all day surrounded by books upon books, art and beautiful architecture. We would absolutely have to eat at the Noho Salsa & Beer, go thrifting in Hollywood and then end up driving up the PCH towards Malibu’s Reel Inn seafood restaurant. Delicious.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My story truly begins *literally and figuratively* with my amazing parents. They not only love me wholeheartedly but they have supported me in every endeavor. Our household was full of creativity, art, music and laughter. Whatever brought us joy was the most important thing. I still feel that way about how I live my life and I am forever grateful. I dedicate this shoutout to them!
