We had the good fortune of connecting with Jesse Cai and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jesse, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I started learning classical music training and playing guitars at a young age, and from the moment I picked up an instrument, it felt like second nature. Music quickly became an integral part of my life, shaping not only my skills but also my creative mindset. I didn’t go to any parties or had fun in college, I would always just sit in the chair recording stuff. I felt it was only natural to continue pursuing an artistic and creative career after college. I played in bands, spending countless hours jamming, writing songs, fully immersing myself in the process. Rocking out with other musicians was an unforgettable experience that deepened my passion for creating and collaborating.

Over time, my interests have progressed more towards the world of film scoring, commercials, and musical theatre, where I could blend storytelling with sound in unique and meaningful ways. Working on these projects allowed me to develop a broader perspective on music production and composition. The more I worked in studios, the more I realized that I could do so much more than just play. I could help shape and refine other artists’ ideas, bringing their creative visions to life. A ton of musicians share a similar path, transitioning from performing to production, and I’ve come to appreciate how fulfilling it is to be behind the scenes, crafting sounds that elevate a project. Whether in a band, a studio, or a theater, the common thread has always been my love for music and my drive to create something that resonates with others.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
A lot of my work revolves around producing an artist’s music or recording guitars for a song, but what sets me apart is my work in musical theatre. It’s a niche that has given me a unique perspective on music production, shaping my approach in ways that differ from many traditional producers. Working in theater taught me the importance of storytelling, dynamics, and creating an immersive experience—skills that I now bring into the studio when helping artists shape their sound. I take pride in every project I’ve been a part of, whether it’s crafting a theatrical score or producing an artist’s album.

I’ve faced tough challenges, like working with a very limited number of musicians while still needing to create a massive, full-bodied sound capable of reaching an audience of 2,000 to 5,000. These experiences have sharpened my problem-solving skills, teaching me how to maximize every resource and think creatively under pressure. Over time, I’ve realized that my brand isn’t just about making music—it’s about crisis-solving. Musical theatre is relatively new to younger audiences, but it’s gaining popularity, much like the rise of rock music post-COVID. People crave the organic experience that theatre offers, especially after spending so much time in front of screens.

I think right now digital platforms, technology and AI have been transforming the industry, but my team and I have been helping people get an organic sound on their songs, films, commercials or musical theatres. Recording is really an art that should be continuously practiced and preserved.
