We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessey Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessey, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I am so blessed to have the ability to take advantage of the opportunities I have been given. Surprisingly enough, I got my bachelor’s degree in Theology a few years ago and wanted to be a children’s pastor. I pursued this career several times and it was just not working out. Growing up in an old school, religious home, I thought that Christians were only supposed to work in a church. It wasn’t until I was talking to my brother, Richard, about how frustrated I was with my future that I considered another option. He asked me if I had ever thought about pursuing a career in art. I really hadn’t. My mind was completely closed to any other possibility, even though I always loved creating art. He suggested to look into being a tattoo artist, but that thought had never crossed my mind. After allowing myself to be open to all the different choices I had, I discovered that tattooing sounded pretty sweet. But my path was still far from smooth after figuring that out. I struggled to find the right opportunity to pursue and faced many hurdles along the way. But God has blessed me so much through this art form and I am very grateful to be where I am at.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Tattooing is such a unique art form that continues to develop. I believe my art style will continue to develop as well. My favorite things to tattoo are anything cartoon/anime, and neo-traditional style art. The clients I have ask me for a variety of styles, and I’m always excited to try something a little different. But even so, I never take on a project that I do not think I can nail. I am so grateful to be an artist in a time where clients are prioritized and their wishes can be granted. I try my best to prioritize my client’s comfort and their whole experience. In my opinion, a client should be able to trust you because of the respect you show for them and their requests. My clients are always included in the design process, given opportunities to make changes to the drawing or placement, given a comfortable environment, and continue to be checked in with to make sure everything goes smoothly with no surprises. My attentiveness and adaptability is what sets me a part from other tattoo artists. It is an honor that someone would want me to put a permanent piece of art on their body, and it is my job to make sure they love their tattoo.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would truly not be in the place I am if it wasn’t for my amazing husband, Kevin. He is my number one supporter and continues to encourage me in so many different ways. There have been and still are so many days when I want to give up. Tattooing takes up a lot of my time and energy, but Kevin still makes sure that we make it a priority as a team. He has stayed up late with me countless times when I am tattooing a new client, answered a million questions about whether or not a design looks good, and listens to all my stress stories and comforts me through them. He has even offered his skin as a practice place for my work. I am so grateful for all the affirmative words Kevin has given me and ways he continues to be there for me as I pursue my dream.
