Meet Jéssica | Jewelry Designer and Multiculturalist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jéssica and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jéssica, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting Oceano, my thought process was to highlight my passion for jewelry and my passion for my Brazilian culture. My culture is all about being vibrant and creative and I wanted to share my eye for creativity and design. I thought, “maybe if I can make this into a small business and possibly watch it grow slowly it’ll all be worth it” and it absolutely has been.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Oceano stands out because it’s not just another brand based in L.A, it’s a brand where most of the items are either straight from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil or handmade by yours truly.
It wasn’t always easy and it’s still difficult sometimes. Trying to get pieces sent here to L.A from Brazil is a challenge and also learning along the way what works and doesn’t work design wise is also humbling. A lot got invested into Oceano and I had times where I did want to give up but what’s great about having a support system is that they’re always there to push you and believe in you when you don’t believe in yourself sometimes.
I want people to know that having a creative funk sometimes is just a cloud that passes by. But when it passes, the spark will always ignite again. Keep going!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That’s an interesting question, I love Japanese food so I always resort to RamenYa in West LA it’s amazing and portions are always generous.
In terms of a night out, I like going to local bars, nothing too crowded where you can’t move or hear anyone speak. One of my friends is a DJ and has sets regularly so I’d definitely also take them to her set for a night of dancing!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It’s hard to pinpoint one person when everyone in my community has helped bring this vision together. Inspirational wise, definitely one of my best friends Ulala Shirahama inspired me to look into jewelry because when I’d see her brand “Mr.Saturday”, it was always so timeless and beautiful.
My partner being in film and photography, he has done all my photos and videos for the brand which I’m so grateful for as well. All my models are also all my friends so literally everyone plays part and wants to see me succeed in something I’m passionate in which makes me eternally thankful.
