We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Z and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica Z, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The Most Important Factor Behind My Success

The most important factor behind my success has been being surrounded by people who genuinely love and believe in me—my family, my closest friends, and those who have stood by me in both bold dreams and quiet battles. Even if they didn’t always understand the vision or share the same level of risk, they never spoke doubt or discouragement over me. Their presence gave me strength—and their silent belief was often louder than words.

I’ve always been a bit of a risk taker—drawn to places others avoid, willing to go to the ends of the earth for the sake of purpose. Whether it’s serving people in remote villages, visiting slums, hospitals, or prisons, or simply walking alongside someone who’s hurting—I go because I’m called. That calling is what fuels everything I do.

What grounds me and propels me forward—especially in the face of fear—is my faith. My faith in God, in Jesus Christ, is what defines me, strengthens me, and reminds me that nothing is impossible. I don’t let fear have the final say; I’ve learned to walk through it, rise above it, and lead with courage, because I know I was created for something greater than comfort.

The love of God compels me, and I’ve seen what’s possible when we trust in something bigger than ourselves. My success is not about being the loudest in the room—it’s about being willing to go, willing to love, and willing to believe that even one life touched is worth it all.

I believe success is rooted in faith, love, and bold obedience. My brand, my work, and my journey all flow from that foundation. Everything I’ve accomplished so far—every mountain climbed, every dream realized—has come from choosing to believe in the God of the impossible.

And I’m still climbing. There are still mountains to conquer, dreams to chase, and people to serve. My hope is that through my story, others are inspired to rise up in their own callings—not to be like me, but to be exactly who they were created to be.

Because in the end, it’s never been about me. It’s always been about being a vessel for something greater, and bringing love, light, and hope into a world that needs it.

More About My Work & Story

I am the founder of Freedom To The Nations Ministries, a 501(c)(3) charitable and faith-based organization founded in 2008, devoted to serving the poor, empowering communities, and sharing the hope of the Gospel around the world. Since 1995, I’ve traveled across nations—preaching, training, and partnering with local leaders in places many don’t see or choose not to go.

My work has taken me to the Amazon jungle, the slums of India, the deserts of Turkana in Kenya, Sudan, Pakistan, China, and more. I’ve ministered in prisons, visited hospitals, spent time in orphanages, and led evangelistic outreaches, women’s empowerment conferences, and leadership training events. Wherever I go, I carry a message of faith, healing, and hope—and a willingness to sit with people in their pain while pointing them toward possibility.

In every country, I’ve seen a common thread: the human need to be seen, heard, and loved. That’s the heartbeat of everything I do—whether it’s preaching the Gospel, handing out food in a rural village, or quietly praying with someone in a hospital bed.

My journey hasn’t been easy. I’ve faced rejection, discouragement, cultural resistance, and even moments of deep self-doubt. But I was raised with strength.

My father, whom I lovingly called mi papito, believed in me before I ever believed in myself. He used to say, “Prepare yourself and never give up”—a simple truth that became a guiding light during the most difficult seasons of my life. He passed when I was just 24, but the wisdom he instilled in me has never left. His strength became my foundation, especially in moments when the road felt too steep to climb.

And then there’s my mother—a free spirit, bold and vibrant, full of creativity and authenticity. She lived outside the lines and taught me to do the same. She modeled what it looks like to own who you are without apology. Between both of them, I inherited resilience, imagination, and a deep sense of purpose.

Professionally, I also spent 27 years as a registered nurse, bringing the same heart for healing into hospitals across the U.S. Just like in my ministry work, my nursing career was about more than physical care—it was about meeting people where they were, holding space for them in their most vulnerable moments, and offering dignity and hope.

Most recently, I’ve stepped into a new season of leadership as a candidate for State Assembly in California—continuing my lifelong mission of public service and advocacy for those whose voices often go unheard.

What sets me apart is that I don’t separate who I am from what I do. My faith is central, but so is compassion, cultural humility, and the willingness to show up for people—whether in a sanctuary, a slum, a hospital ward, or a leadership circle.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is this: Impact doesn’t come from a title—it comes from service. It comes from saying “yes” even when it’s uncomfortable, inconvenient, or unseen.

If there’s one thing I want people to know about me, it’s that my story is rooted in purpose, not position. I’m not driven by platforms or applause—but by a calling to bring light where there’s darkness, hope where there’s despair, and strength to those who feel forgotten.

This is more than a mission.
It’s who I am.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If My Best Friend Came to Visit LA for a Week…

I grew up in Redondo Beach, in the heart of LA’s South Bay, so showing someone around here feels like sharing a piece of my soul. If my best friend were visiting Los Angeles and the Beach Cities for the first time, here’s the unforgettable week I’d plan for them—filled with sunsets, stories, local flavor, and all the magic LA has to offer.

Day 1: Redondo Beach Esplanade, Riviera Village & Pier Concerts

We’d start the week with a peaceful walk along the Esplanade in Redondo Beach, one of my favorite spots. The Esplanade sits high above the beach, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the South Bay coastline. As we stroll, we’d take in the ocean breeze, watch the seagulls and coastal birds glide overhead, and soak in the laid-back vibe of locals walking their dogs, jogging, or simply enjoying the day.

From there, we’d head over to Riviera Village, a charming local shopping and dining area. We’d browse the boutiques, explore the neighborhood, and stop at Yellow Vase, one of my go-to cafés, for a rich cappuccino or espresso and a delicious pastry. It’s the perfect spot to savor the morning.

Later in the afternoon, we’d make our way to the Redondo Beach Pier, where I’d share stories about what the Pier was like back in the 80s compared to its vibrant, updated version today. We’d explore the shops, grab some fresh seafood at the Chart House, and toast to day one with something cold and refreshing.

To end the day, we’d join the community for the Redondo Beach Pier Summer Concert Series—a local tradition filled with live music, dancing in the open air, and the sun setting over the ocean. There’s nothing like moving to the rhythm of the music under the stars, surrounded by locals, laughter, and the sound of waves crashing below. It’s the perfect summer evening—and the perfect kickoff to a magical week in LA.

Day 2: Beach Cruiser Ride from Redondo to Marina del Rey

We’d start the day dressed for sunshine—bathing suits under breezy clothes, sun hats, sunscreen, and sandals or sneakers. With water bottles in tow, we’d hop on our beach cruisers and set off along the scenic Strand, pedaling from Redondo Beach Pier all the way to Marina del Rey. The ride takes us through Hermosa, Manhattan Beach, Dockweiler, and beyond, with the ocean always at our side and that perfect California breeze on our skin.

It’s a ride filled with laughter, golden tans, and the joy of soaking up beach life. Once we reach the Marina, we’d cool off with a refreshing, ice-cold slushy and relax under the shade, watching the boats bob in the water and taking in the peaceful rhythm of the harbor.

After a little break, we’d stroll to Beachside Restaurant & Bar for a long, savory seafood lunch—oysters, lobster, crab, and all the coastal favorites. No rush, just good food and great conversation. Then we’d cruise back home at a slower pace, catching glimpses of the shoreline and feeling that satisfied kind of tired you only get from a perfect beach day.

We’d end the day with a sunset charcuterie board, a glass of our favorite drink, and the soft ocean breeze reminding us how lucky we are to share this California dream—especially with your best friend by your side.

Day 3: Dinosaurs & Mestizos in Downtown LA

Today we’d head into the heart of LA for a little time travel—The Natural History Museum is one of my favorite places. It’s like stepping into a living storybook of our planet. Towering dinosaur skeletons, sparkling gemstones, and exhibits that trace the origins of life make it both educational and awe-inspiring. You walk in curious, and leave completely captivated.

For lunch, we’d visit Mestizos, an unforgettable spot that celebrates the rich fusion of indigenous Mexican and Spanish heritage—a culinary reflection of history and identity. The flavors are bold, layered, and completely transportive. Every dish is a mouth-watering experience, packed with spices, textures, and depth—like a flavor explosion in every bite.

The décor is warm and charming, the atmosphere intimate, and the service exceptional. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, and you soak in the culture—sometimes with live mariachis or special events that add to the magic. Mestizos is more than just a meal—it’s a celebration of heritage, passion, and the very best of Mexican-Spanish cuisine.

Day 4: Universal Studios Hollywood – Movie Magic & Thrills

This is our big movie magic day! A full day at Universal Studios Hollywood is like stepping straight into the heart of Hollywood’s imagination. The studio tour gives a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how the magic is made—from the sets of classics like Jaws and Back to the Future to newer favorites like Jurassic World.

We’d scream our way through Revenge of the Mummy, take flight with E.T., and get soaked at the explosive WaterWorld stunt show. Every corner of the park offers something unforgettable—nostalgia, adrenaline, and cinematic wonder all in one place.

And after the rides? We’d wind down at Universal City Walk, an electric promenade packed with music, entertainment, and an array of world-class restaurants and flavors to satisfy every craving. From gourmet bites to sweet treats, it’s the perfect place to relax, refuel, and soak up the energy of the day.

Day 5: Griffith Park Hike, Observatory Views & Garden Café Stop

After a few high-energy days, today would be all about slowing down and recharging. We’d start with a peaceful hike through Griffith Park, winding through the Hollywood Hills with sweeping city views, fresh air, and the simple joy of being surrounded by nature. No rush—just time to breathe, reflect, and take in the beauty of LA from above.

At the top, we’d visit the iconic Griffith Observatory, where we’d gaze out at the city skyline and the famous Hollywood Sign. Inside, we’d explore the stars through interactive exhibits and, if the timing’s right, catch a glimpse of the cosmos through one of the telescopes.

On the way home, we’d stop at the charming Alcove Café & Bakery—a local gem tucked into a pair of historic bungalows with cozy garden patios. It’s the perfect spot to unwind over American classics, artisan baked goods, hand-roasted coffee, or even a refreshing cocktail. A relaxed, soul-filling way to end the day.

Day 6: The Getty Museum, Gardens & Artistic Discovery

Today we’d immerse ourselves in a day of culture, beauty, and inspiration at The Getty Center—a world-class destination where art, architecture, gardens, and breathtaking city views come together in perfect harmony.

With audio guides in hand, we’d wander through centuries of art, from Greek and Roman antiquities to medieval masterpieces and modern works—each gallery telling stories of history, humanity, and creativity. The museum’s modern design is a masterpiece in itself, perched high above Los Angeles, offering spectacular panoramic views of the city below.

We’d explore the Central Garden, a living work of art with flowing water, vibrant blooms, and peaceful paths—a place to pause, reflect, and simply enjoy being outdoors.

Lunch would be a relaxed affair at the outdoor garden café, surrounded by greenery and sunshine—perfect for a light bite and a refreshing drink.

Before heading out, we’d browse the Getty gift shops, filled with treasures inspired by art and architecture—from jewelry and books to toys and home décor. And if we’re feeling curious, we might even peek into one of the world-renowned art libraries onsite.

It’s a day to slow down, look deeper, and enjoy the best of what LA has to offer—elevated, enriching, and unforgettable.

Day 7: Disneyland – The Grand Finale

To end our unforgettable week, we’d spend the day at the one and only Disneyland—the happiest place on earth. Because no matter how old we are, we all deserve a day to be kids again.

From the moment we walk down Main Street, U.S.A., it’s like stepping into a dream. We’d indulge in cotton candy, buttery popcorn, and sweet treats as we explore the magic of Disneyland’s timeless rides—like the thrilling Space Mountain, the whimsical charm of It’s a Small World, and the immersive adventure of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

We’d meet our favorite Disney characters, enjoy live music and shows throughout the park, and maybe even book a character dining experience for an extra special memory. If it’s the season, we’d catch one of the holiday parades—a joyful, heartwarming celebration full of lights, music, and pure Disney magic.

There’s no better way to wrap up a week of adventure, laughter, and discovery than with a day full of wonder, nostalgia, and childlike joy—shared with your best friend in a place where every corner is made to make you smile.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout: To My Family, With Love

I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my incredible parents, Humberto C. Maldonado and Zonia Maldonado De Rivero.

I was born in Lima, Peru, and moved to the U.S. at the age of 12. My family built a life in Redondo Beach, California, in the South Bay of Los Angeles. Growing up as an immigrant shaped my heart, my grit, and my appreciation for the sacrifices my parents made to give us opportunity. Their love and courage are at the root of everything I do.

I was blessed to grow up with a loving father who believed in me deeply. He saw my potential early on and always encouraged me to pursue my dreams—no matter the cost. I called him “mi papito”. He was a forward thinker who foresaw the challenges I would face as a woman stepping into leadership. His words have carried me through some of the hardest moments of my life:
“Prepare yourself, study, and never give up. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t. You can accomplish anything you set your mind to do.”

Though he passed away when I was 24, I still hear his voice, see his affirming smile, and feel his strength living on in me. His wisdom laid the foundation, and it’s with deep faith, purpose, and perseverance that I now move forward to fulfill the dreams I carry in my heart.

My mother, Zonia, is a vibrant, free spirit—resilient, creative, and unapologetically herself. Growing up, I knew there was something different about her—something rare. She moved through life against the grid, often making others uncomfortable simply because of how brightly she shined. She was striking, expressive, and ahead of her time—a trendsetter, the first woman in her family to work outside the home, and a bold entrepreneur.

As a child, I didn’t always understand her. My father was steady and conservative; my mother was colorful, electric, and full of life. But as I grew older, I came to admire her deeply. She taught me the power of freedom of expression, individuality, and creativity. She has what I call the “I don’t care anointing”—she embraces who she is and never feels the need to apologize for it.

People often say I remind them of her. That’s a compliment I wear with pride.

To my brother Humberto—thank you for stepping in with strength and wisdom after our father’s passing. Your presence has anchored me in ways I’ll always be grateful for.

To my sisters—Denisse, Gianinna, and Kattya—thank you for quietly believing in me, encouraging me in your own way, and standing with me through every challenge and milestone.
