We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessy Lipton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessy, how do you think about risk?
I think risk taking plays so many vital roles in starting any career, especially in the music industry. For me personally a huge risk for me was leaving school, family, friends and basically my whole life back at home on the east coast and moving across the country to be here in LA. I feel like life just shows you over time to believe in that saying “with great risk comes great reward” and as long as you truly believe every decision you make, no matter how big or small, it is still taking you closer to what you’re working towards. There are also so many risks you need to take while building your artistry whether its when you’re creating the music itself, or the other million small leaps you take to try starting off your career. You constantly need to try differing yourself from other artists and try to find new ways to be seen for yourself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Making music is a process that I genuinely feel like I was born to do. Ever since I can remember this has been my greatest passion, and there’s no other feeling like leaving the studio having just made such an amazing song. I’d honestly say this year is my most exciting year yet for releases and generally where I’m at with my music. I’ve been working on developing my sound for the past seven years now, and at twenty-two years old, I finally feel the happiest and most authentic with what I’m making now. Getting to this point definitely took me on some very frustrating roads, especially trying to figure it all out when I was fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, but I think that’s just apart of growing up and truly thinking I had to have it all figured out then, when I really just didn’t. As soon as I lost the pressure I had on myself to determine exactly what type of sound I wanted to pursue and put out into the world, I began writing music that was solely for myself, and that’s when I realized it felt right. I wanna mention this song I released March of last year titled, “Perfect World” which I wrote with the amazing Danny Spadaro, who also produced the record. When I received the first demo to that song I just remember turning it on my kitchen speaker and immediately sobbing because of how right it felt. I’ve truly never been more excited to share what I’ve been creating recently, and to give a better representation of who I am and what that sounds like. I guess what I’m most excited for people to hopefully takeaway from my brand and story is honesty. Vulnerability is a super scary part of us humans but with my music all I really want is to show that it’s okay to embrace that and hopefully my music can feel like a hug while you do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area, I’d most definitely take them to the Silverlake flea market. Echo Park and Silverlake in general are just such cute areas to walk around in and meet such cool people, I’d have to take them around there for the majority of our time. Canyon Coffee in Echo Park is my favorite place to hit up before the flea, or any day I find myself in that area. I also love going to the Hollywood Farmers Market on Sundays which is also pretty close to any one of the flea markets. Another thing I love to do when it’s nice out is go into Malibu and have a beach day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to the most supportive person in my life, my beautiful mother. From day one she’s been more than supportive of everything I’ve ever dreamed of doing and has gone out of her way to show that. I dedicate not only this shoutout to her, but also every victory in my career to her as well.
