Meet Jill Ettinger | Founder and CEO, Ethos

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jill Ettinger and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jill, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Having been in digital media and e-commerce for more than a decade, I saw a gap in the market about the alignment between our personal well-being and the health of the planet. There were lots of platforms speaking to one or the other, but not the connection. I also noticed a lot of the sustainability coverage was missing a large segment of the market and an audience eager to support higher-end brands and products than what was being offered by most platforms. So Ethos was born out of that. We’re now the leading digital home for personal and planetary well-being. We’ve now got a newsletter list of more than 40,000 subscribers and growing.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Ethos launched during the COVID pandemic — so that presented its own set of challenges. But it was also such a great time to focus and refine the brand and what we’re doing. We’ve just held our first in-person event in LA, Good Nature. It was quite a success. When we first launched, events weren’t really on our radar because of the state of the world, but to see us be able to evolve to that space in just a few short years is really inspiring. We had leading experts in fashion, food, climate, and ethical businesses as well as leaders in the media and entertainment industry all together for inspired conversations and connections. And that’s really what Ethos is about, whether online or in person — our curated content and products are all great conversation starters. How will this improve my life? How will it impact the world? How can I use this information to be a better version of myself? How can I do more to help others?
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s no place like LA! Anyone who comes to visit me knows we’re going to two places, rain or shine: Griffith Park and Point Dume in Malibu. People think of LA as Hollywood or crowded Venice Beach but there’s so much incredible space here. The city is a certified wildlife habitat and I love taking visitors through the trails in Griffith and the natural reserve at Point Dume. There’s so much great art in the city, too. The Getty is a favorite and so is the Broad. Some of my favorite restaurants are Crossroads in West Hollywood, Planta in Marina del Rey, and Justine’s in Frogtown. I also love Hot Tongue pizza, Ramen Hood, and Pura Vita. And nothing beats a Sunday morning at the Hollywood Farmers Market.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My daughter, Imogene, is my biggest motivation. Making the world more beautiful, healthy, and kind for her and those who will come after her, keeps me going.
