We had the good fortune of connecting with JJ Walsh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JJ, what principle do you value most?
I like experimentation and creativity, but I also like routine. Ultimately, it boils down to a formula. What I find exciting is that you can experiment with the formula to suit your changing needs. I like finding formulas that have an impact and results across everything I do in life. And skincare is just that: there is a huge scope for creativity and flexibility for the best outcomes.
The three pillars we come back to at Formula Fig are:
SCIENCE-FORWARD SKINCARE. Results-obsessed, we offer best-in-class, technology-driven treatments and products. Delivered by trusted medical professionals.
A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE. We create unrivalled, considered guest experiences that transform the everyday. Design-led, aspirational and efficiently curated, encountering Formula Fig transports you from the world outside.
AN INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY. We believe in the power of community, creating an emotionally connected, human experience that is authentic, personal, and accessible.
What should our readers know about your business?
Rather than needing to go to a med-spa for facials, a dermatologist for injectables, and a retailer for products, we sought a place that offered it all—a place that was aspirational yet accessible, high-tech yet human, results-driven yet luxurious. This place didn’t exist, so we created it.
Formula Fig’s immersive locations (Fig Bars) offer an innovative range of 30-minute, technology-driven facial treatments, neuromodulators, and dermal filler injections delivered by trusted medical professionals, alongside a curated assortment of curated skincare products.
Headquartered in Los Angeles, Formula Fig is powered by a deep belief in community, design, and service — helping all guests #GiveAFig about their skin.
Simply put, we genuinely care about how we impact those around us. Giving a fig is about striving for excellence — not perfection. It’s about showing up for yourself. For your guests. For your team. For your community. Every day, in everything you do. We pride ourselves on going the extra mile to make a lasting impression, and we seek out opportunities to do so.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
1. Erewhon for a wellness shot – I like their tonics.
2. Pilates class at The Studio MDR.
3. Formula Fig for an 8 a.m. All-In facial. Take it “off menu” and make it a double.
4. Pops Bagels at Culver Steps.
5. A stroll to Platform—coffee from Blue Bottle. Peruse Teller and undoubtedly pick up a desirable item of clothing. Then, onto il Bucco Vita—their tableware is divine.
6. Wander to Destroyer for lunch – their daily special you can’t go wrong. Sit and watch the world go by.
7. If you feel it, a quick power hike up the Baldwin Hills, AKA The Culver Stairs.
8. Early dinner at Afuri – get your name down early.
9. What’s On at the Kirk Douglas Theatre
10. Finish off your evening at Salt & Straw.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I worked for Condé Nast for many years under the indomitable Fashion editor Isabella Blow. The lessons she taught me informed much of my creative worldview. One thing she always said was that beautiful, memorable things always combine the hard and the soft. This is something you can experience walking into any Formula Fig!
There are two things that I have carried into Fig to this day.
Jolie Laide – there needs to be a juxtaposition in all you create – hard and soft. This is woven through the Fig Brand.
Experiences should be transportive. Inspiration is important. How can you find inspiration from art? The natural world? How can your inspiration inspire others? How can it shape how you feel and make others feel?
