We had the good fortune of connecting with JoAnn Dickinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JoAnn, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is hard work, creating efficient work habits/schedule, being diligent and following through with every step of the process. The success of my brand is being consistent.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I began writing children’s books in 2016 and published two books with expensive, traditional publishing houses.

I didn’t find that financially beneficial because as an author you are at the mercy of who they hire which can be just mediocre.

I learned later my first two, rhyming book were not metered correctly, and the books was overpriced which made them failed project before printed.

In 2021 I began learning about self-publishing, hiring an author coach, my own editor, illustrators, book designer and printers.

With previous business experience I quickly learned the difference between interviewing and hiring your own vendors or just settle for what someone else hired.

I quickly created a DBA to place under my existing corporation, learned about Kindle Direct Publishing on Amazon and self-promoting my books by using social media platforms and Amazon ads.

Last year I launched my publishing company, Two Sweet Peas Publishing and quickly published 5 new books with 3 more coming out this year.

As an entrepreneur and self-published author, you have full control over hiring the vendors needed to create a product that sells.
My success came from fast tracking a business by long hours, hard work, hiring coaches, influencers, learning trends, what sells and what doesn’t.

I’ve learned the illustrators play a huge role in what you bring to the market. Not every style is liked and not every subject is always what parents are looking for to read to their children. Be sure to include a message and an opportunity to become a teaching tool children can learn from.

My desire is for parents to know my passion in my work; I am always looking to teach Kindness, Compassion, Acceptance, and Fitting In.

My desire is that every book I write can be used as a teaching tool whether its values, social and emotional learning or building self-esteem and self-confidence in young people today.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in a beach community filled with history, places to dine and entertainment. I would take them downtown at one of the best restaurants with a beach front view, later take them to a summer concern on the sand to enjoy music and cocktails.
The next day I would take them to the art district filled with small mom & pop shops selling products from local artists. Take a bike ride to the pier and stroll through an artesian market filled with vendors and artists selling their products.
Take them to see a local baseball, football game at a famous stadium.
Visit several historical museums filled with history of local talent.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I put myself on a fast track for learning the self-published author business in 2022. I hired several Author coaches, but Stacy C. Bauer was my main coach and mentor. Stacy is brilliant when it comes to fast-tracking your business. Her one-on-one coaching is where I learned the most from her as well as her online classes.
