We had the good fortune of connecting with Joanna Borov and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joanna, how do you think about risk?
I believe that risk is an inevitable part of life. We take a risk more often than we realize. For me moving out of my country Poland, first to the UK and then to the USA was risky. I didn’t know many people and habits in the new places. It took me a while to learn about the cities but in both cases, it was definitely worth it. Fighting for my dreams gave me happiness and II believe it’s always the right thing to do- to pursue happiness. However, from the time perspective and also business-wise, it is also important to minimize potential risk and have some kind of safety net. If your dream is to become an artist or entrepreneur, make sure you have some savings before you quit your job. Sometimes it’s gonna take more time but it’s ok, it’s important to be patient and persiistant.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always been passionate about fashion, that’s why I decided to move to London and start my career. I’ve worked as a model for different brands in designers all over the world. I walked at Paris Fashion Week, Miami Swim Week, I also appeared in many different publications including British Vogue, Playboy, Maxim, Marie Claire. Recently, I started to work on my own designs. I believe that women should express their personality through the way they dress. I love to feel sexy and classy at the same time. I appreciate good quality fabrics and garments that can be worn for different occasions. Having all those things in mind I created my fashion label Jo Borov. It’s easier this time since I already own one business based in the UK, which is a brand that offers organic baby. clothes and toys. The beginnings were very difficult and it is still challenging especially in regards to the situation in the world and state of the fashion industry post-pandemic. Everyday I learn something new about business and I also work on the creative part.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA is a place with endless possibilities. I live very close to Malibu and I absolutely love the area. The beach is beautiful and of course, Nobu Malibu or Geoffrey’s is a must! Nearby West Lake Village is also amazing, especially for people that prefer quiet places. I really enjoyed lunch at the Four Seasons there and I’d certainly recommend that place. Also Malibu as well as Hollywood has great canyons for hiking. I spend a significant amount of time in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood. My favorite restaurants are Craigs, Catch LA, Avra, BOA, Mr. Chow, Katana. I like the Santa Monica area for some near-the-ocean activities like roller skates and biking. Also, it is definitely worth seeing some museums and art galleries.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m blessed and fortunate to say I have a supportive family. However, my family is far away. I met a lot of amazing people on my journey and I learned a lot from them. I believe that everything happens for a reason and there’s a reason for every person to appear in our lives. I appreciate people who encouraged me to go after my dreams, gave me love and support.
