We had the good fortune of connecting with Joanna Hale-McGill and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joanna, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
My singing career has taught me a great deal about people, those around me, those who support, and even those who don’t support. They’ve all been a major help to get me to where I am. People will be people, but its those that stand by you no matter what that helps build you. I found it to be very critical to allow someone to show you who they are along this journey. I’ve learned not to take advice from everyone because most don’t want to see you succeed, they want to hinder your progress or they simply just don’t like you for their own insecurities. Some people are seasonal in your life. Use your discernment to determine people are. Never ignore the red flags!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Although I’ve been a singer for my ENTIRE LIFE, I never fully embraced the authenticity of my vocal abilities. As a young girl I knew I could sing, but always compared myself to others. It wasn’t until winning Walmart’s Next Gospel Superstar Competition that I actually took notice and understanding of who I was. With this title I was afforded the opportunity to have my first song written and produced by Deitrick Haddon and open for him and Yolanda Adams at the Tom Joyner Family Reunion. With that I recorded a jingle for the Tom Joyner Morning Show. The jingle was well received that we turned the jingle into my 1st Billboard Charting song entitled, I Can Do Anything”. This song made it to #21 on the Billboard Gospel indicator Charts. I later released my next single entitled Be Patient which reached #5 on The Billboard Gospel Indicator Chart. I made my 1st National Television appearance in Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger as a guest singer. I later went on to star in a stage play entitled Crowns as the “Pastors Wife! My most memorable accomplishment in my career was when I was a guest pastor in BET’s Sacrifice with Richard Roundtree, Clifton Powell and Paula Patton. This has not been a easy journey at all, but I’m grateful for everything I’ve endured. Although I’m not totally where I want to be in my career,

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A big shout out to my husband Jarmell McGill for being my biggest supporter! He has constantly supported my dream even when I didn’t see it! He’s allowed me to do music and ministry fulltime while he carries the weight of the house. He never complains, it’s always, “whatever you wanna do Joanna”. That’s major and I can’t say thank you enough for supporting me, pushing me and allowing me to do what God has created me to do.
