We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Goldberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joe, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I always wanted to be my own boss. I trust my judgement and execution so I knew I wanted to start my own business. I was buying and selling shoes all throughout middle school and early high school so I was familiar with doing business with people online which got me prepared for starting a business around my passion.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m fascinated by life. It’s a constant rollercoaster of up and downs which makes it so exciting. I’ve always been into documenting my life because I cherish moments and can’t imagine not ever being able to remember those times. A photo or video will spark so many moments in my mind that I then can’t forget. I love to take photos of my friends, family, and anybody who I find interest in and most people interest me. When you can gain the trust of a person and they allow you to take their portrait, it’s an honor. I try to show the intimacy of the moment through the photo and normally when someone is photographed by me they are very thankful and use the photo as their profile photo or just post it but to know that I could take a photo for them to have their whole life is special. Not everyone gets their photo taken often at all so when they can receive one it’s a special one and I’m glad I can provide that for them. Every photo takes you to a new place and story. I always feel some type of way when looking through my photos. Portraits can be emotional to the point that you really can see the pain someones been through their whole life to someone so happy that it makes you smile just looking at it. When I look back on travel photos I take I smile and remember how amazing that place and time was and then I always end up wanting to get back on the road and experience new places and cultures.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Most of my best friends live either in my neighborhood or very close by. I’ve been blessed with having such a diverse group of friends. We’ve been friends since elementary school playing basketball at the same couple parks for over 10 years now. Nothing can break us apart. I love them and would do anything for them. We’ve all been through so much and every time I see any of them all stress is released. We have had the greatest memories ever and I’ve been so fortunate to be able to have captured so many of those moments. DC shaped me into the man I am today. The basketball, rap & gogo, food, street art, culture, I love everything about DC. I feel so grateful to have grown up here. Taking photos in DC is special for me, always so many things going on. It’s my home, always will be,
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t have been able to chase my passion the way I have in life if it wasn’t for my Mom, Dad, and brother. My brother Henry passed away when I was very young but that didn’t tear us apart it made our bond stronger. They always would encourage me to go out and take photos. They never held me back from an opportunity. They trusted me and my judgement so they’d allow me to travel on my own at a very young age and photograph whatever I wanted.
