We had the good fortune of connecting with John Akhoian and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my first business when I was 19 years old. I called it H & A plumbing then renamed it High Quality Plumbing. I had no choice. I had to start earning more money to replace my dads income after he died, so I basically did it to help support my mom and not lose our house we had bought two years prior.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Rooter Hero not only provides quality services, competitive pricing and certified, licensed and insured plumbers, our staff is also invested in ensuring that we make the customer the hero. Our employees share our values of faith, integrity, service and teamwork. With more than 90 years of plumbing experience, we pride ourselves on making the customer experience memorable and satisfying.

But, this hasn’t always been easy. In my book, “Temporarily Broken: The John Akhoian Story,” I focus on how to succeed in business and in life. My teen years were a time when I needed my father the most, but he had passed away from a heart attack and wasn’t there to get me off the streets and away from illegal activity. I had to make hard decisions to do that myself. But, after learning the plumbing trade from a family friend who hired me shortly after my father’s death, I was able to take my earnings and parlay them into a series of home service franchises.

I eventually helped co-found Rooter Hero and today I am a successful industry leader, entrepreneur, philanthropist and father.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Newport Beach and stay there. We’d start the day by hanging out at the beach or we could hike or go mountain biking on some of the area’s beautiful nature trails. After that, we’d go to Javier’s Crystal Cove for dinner. We could either stay at Javier’s for some tequila tasting or head over to RED O’s Taste of Mexico to try their hand-selected tequila offerings.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this to my mom for encouraging me to get into plumbing, my wife for helping me since day one, my kids for inspiring me to become better and my team at heart land for all they do. I am grateful for all the hard work and effort to help me build this company.
