We had the good fortune of connecting with John Monteleone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My sole personal training focus is to Improve Communities through Movement.
Encouraging people to move, improves the overall health and wellness of the community by increasing longevity, increasing injury resilience, improving mental and psychological wellness, and overall decreasing the medical and health insurance costs for the individual and community. This is my personal training focus and vision.
Improving a community starts with the people in the community. By understanding the client’s health/fitness background, their personal journey (work: life balance), health/fitness goals, and where they are in the journey to get started, we can improve the overall health, fitness, and overall quality of life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been practicing as a personal trainer for over sixteen years. My training is a holistic approach that focuses on the physical, and mental components that improve quality of life. “I am not here to break you down, I am here to build you up.” I am former college athlete, who has experienced more than my fair share of injuries from sport. My approach to personal training spwaned from injury prehab, movement patterns, and postural-core stability focus because I wanted heal myself, and improve injury resiliency for my clients. We do not get injured going, we get injured trying to stop. Meaning, by teaching clients how to stop or decelerate, they are less likely to injured, improve their health and fitness level and quality of life.
I apply this practice with special populations (ortho/med restrictions), general population (age 16 and older), and professional athletes.
The three skills that were vital to my professional success are Patience, Active Listening, and Adaptability.
Patience;
Career: Trust the process, follow you goals, and check in with yourself from time to time. when you rush, that is when you make a mistake.
Professionally: programs and workouts evolve and progress based on the pace at which your client can adapt to the current program stimulus. Meanging, every though you have developed a great program or workout, does not mean your client must follow exactly how the timeline is laid out.
Active Listening – “Present Moment”;
Career: When actively listening, you not listening to react, but to understand and be present for the personal speaking. This skill provides the opportunity to build a connection with another person. In training, this connection allows you change on the fly and exercise or workout if necessary for your client.
Proffessional: when training and coaching a client, nothing matters at that moment more than training my client. Although extreme, this mental focus allows me to coach, and correct techniques immediately. If your client sees you that focused and engaged in the workout, they too will be focused and engaged in their workout. Set the example!
Adaptable,
Career: “Everybody has a plan, until they get punched in the mouth.” – Mike Tyson
Simple, succient, straightforward.
Professional: you may be the greatest exercise for your client, Great! What happens when the same client cannot execute the exercise or does not feel comfortable completing it? You better have a Plan B. Acitve listening provides the opportunity to understand and pivot quickly to this change.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents for the love, support, mentor, and selfless sacrifices she made for me and my siblings growing up. they taught the important lesson that work ethic is always the great equalizer for success. The most important lesson my parents taught me was,”allow your actions to be your words.” This lesson sticks with me today. Your actions always carry more weight in life, and bear more fruit. My wife, the love, support, patience, and understanding to see my vision come to fruition,
